When filing for unemployment, where do I file?

I live and pay taxes in state A.
Company HQ is in state B.
I was based in state C (for only 6 months, changed domiciles).

Thanks in advance for your help.

I just had a similar scenario.

I filed with my home state and was told that since my previous employer was not located here, that I would have to file there (Indiana). The girl I spoke to went ahead and filed for me with Indiana, and since then I have been corresponding directly with Indiana even though I don't live there.

It's all about what state your employer pays unemployment insurance to. (ie where is corporate headquarters?) You can file directly with that state, or you can have your state file for you (like I did.)

Good luck, it definitely helps out. Do not give up with all the BS paperwork. Make sure you fill everything out correctly AND within the timeline they require and everything should work for you.

You should be able to collect from either A, B, or C.

I was given bad info the first time I went to my Labor office too. After a few phone calls I actually got someone fairly intelligent and quite helpful. She researched my problem and had it fixed within the day. Long story short, I collect in my state of residence for 22 weeks (I think). Then, I apply in the state of my former employer and collect there if I'm still unemployed. You might want to go in for a face to face meeting with an unemployment counselor.

I have a friend who did, the counselor steered him to apply in the state of his domicile (NJ) and he's collecting at least twice as much as his home state. His living expenses are half what they would be in NJ by the way. Not a bad deal for him.

Good luck.

I'll second you need to find someone who knows what they're talking about.

What I was told (and may vary state to state) is that my state (WI) didn't have any funds to pay me with, because my employer is not based there and only pays unemployment insurance to their home state (Indiana in my case). This may work differently with other states - just my experience.

I do know that each state pays different amounts. WI for example pays $350/week where IN pays $390/week (maximimums depending on how much you qualify for.) MN which was another option for me pays yet a different amount. So it certainly is in your best interest to figure out where to file to maxmize your benefit.

I would start with your home state, and go from there. Hopefully you'll get someone knowledgeable to help you.

I had a stint on unemployment in NYC several years ago. Unemployment isn't very much.

Gross (before tax) = $405/week

I had them deduct the taxes and as you can imagine it was a lot less. You'll need to supplement this with your savings and maybe find some off-the-book work to make ends meet.

Unemployment doesn't go far, at least here in NYC.

Each week you need to check-in online to ensure that you'll be getting a check. I had mine direct deposited.

File in the state in which you have permanent residency status.

This is not true in my case.

I live in A but was just told by the unemployment peeps that I need to file in B. My former company only pays unemployment insurance to B NOT A.

This sucks..........again.

I filed with my home state (WA). My wages were from IN and AZ (domicile change). The state of WA got the wage info from the other 2 states and did what they called a "consolidated" claim. WA pays me and collects from the other 2. I would also look in to which state will pay more. WA is paying me the state max of 515 a week. AZ would have been 240 a week. IN was something like 420. Good luck cause your going to need it!

Just vote for Barack!

He'll make sure you gets your payback from 'da man! You's gonna get some dat gubment cheese!

Hey Barack--True Change!!! That is all you will have left....

Loved the Debate--told you everything you already know==how bad things are--never what he is going to do??? 908 days in senate and been to Iraq once=in July=when he was running for President??
John as Barack referred to him, has been to how many countries did McCain list to Obama 3-4 countries??????

You ONLY can draw in the state in Which your previous employer or where the last years income was filed...

A is based in GA and was there in 2007, but live in VA
B which where you work now,,, furloughes...you will have to file in GA....GA has to pay the benefits. regardless where you live...or do an interstate claim..
