The head of the Federal Aviation Administration's call for a new airport for Chicago is being seconded by Gary/Chicago International Airport officials who say they want it to be theirs.

"It shows our vision is accurate," said Airport Director Chris Curry. "And that vision is to build the airport to handle the influx of passengers and airplanes that will be coming to the Chicago area."

In addition, Chicago Mayor Richard Daley has been showing renewed interest in Gary's expansion.

In July, Daley, Curry, former Boeing CEO Phil Condit and former Southwest Airlines CEO Herb Kelleher met at Daley's offices to "kick around ideas for the airport," Curry said.

He would not give details of what was discussed but said it was in line with developing Gary as a passenger and cargo port, as described in its FAA-approved master plan.

The City of Chicago helps fund the Gary airport with about $2.5 million in passenger fees collected at Chicago airports.

The Gary airport is currently undergoing a $90 million expansion that also is partially funded by the City of Chicago.

A new Chicago airport or a vast expansion of one of the city's existing airports will be necessary to keep pace with booming demand for air travel in the coming decades, Robert Sturgell, the FAA's acting administrator, said Wednesday.

That's in addition to an ongoing $15 billion expansion of O'Hare International Airport, Sturgell said.

Despite a drop in flights this year as high fuel prices cut into airline profits, the number of air travelers could double to 1 billion annually over the next decade, Sturgell said. And since newer, streamlined planes will carry fewer passengers, the total number of planes flying in and out of airports could increase at an even faster rate, he said.

Chicago plays too vital a role as an aviation hub not to further upgrade airport capacity, Sturgell said, adding that he appreciated the fierce resistance such projects can generate.

"It takes a lot of local political will to move new runways and airports forward," he said in a telephone interview from Washington, D.C.

In a 2007 report, the FAA noted that just two major airports have opened in the last 40 years -- Dallas- Fort Worth and Denver International. As many as four would have to be built over the next 20 to 30 years to meet projected demand, Sturgell said.

No airport built in the Chicagoland area could be controlled by the City of Chicago.

The Peotone "Third Airport" is too far south, and in Will County.

Do you have any idea whatsoever where Peotone is?

Coincident with EON VOR. South side of the Chicago Metro area but southwest of Gary, IN.

There will be a Peotone airport. Count on it. Don't believe me? Guess who owns all the surrounding farmland in that area? That's right, all the well connected politicians in the Chicagoland area. Follow the money. Daley, as usual, wants to have his cake and eat it too.

not arguing with you, arguing with it being annexed into the City of Chicago.

Will County is doing its best to keep it under their control.

About 20 miles from SW border of the city. They take 57 and have the state legislature incorporate it as part of Chicago (the same way Daley Sr. got O'Hare).

The only way a 3rd airport is getting anywhere near MDW or ORD is if Daley approves it, and that will mean he will want it.

Realistically though I don't think you will ever see a another major airport built in Chicago. If anything you would see Rockford and Gary expand.

No arguing here. My post was meant to be more of a general one.

No doubt. The FAA is going to do whatever it can to to keep him out too. That's going to be a tough row to hoe. Then again, Ol' Dick Daley didn't win himself any friends in Great Lakes Regional offices of the FAA after that little stunt over at Meigs Field! Methinks they'd love to poke a stick in his eye.:p

Rockford and Gary have both pitched their proposals but the Feds aren't buying. They've both been turned down for any major expansion. Gary is just another Midway and it's in a free fire zone. Rockford is too far out and doesn't have the growth forcast to justify anything on this scale. The growth for the next 20+ years has been forcast numerous times to be between Chicago and northern IN. Essentially, they want to do what they did in Denver. Get a lot of open space for future expansion and infrastructure. O'Hare had to condemn a bunch of homes for it's current expansion/modernization plans. That was less than popular with the locals.:angryfire S.S. might seem a long way out but like they say, build it and they will come.

One plan is for S.S. to be initially a single or parallel configuration and concentrated on freight. Further expansion to air carrier. Southwest has in the past shown no interest in S.S.

There could always be enough political pressure to go with either Gary or Rockford and the FAA might have to hold their noses. The fact remains that a very large part of the land that would surround S.S. HAS been bought up by a bunch of politico's and their associates.

A beer says in the end, it's South Suburban. Even money on weather Daley gets his fingers in the deal or not.
