Can anyone confirm or deny this my "facts" are very sketchy. I was told that at some time in the 70's a DC-9 accidentally landed at Iosco 6D9 on the way into Oscoda OSC.
 
When you say accidental diversion, are you saying that the flight diverted to due to emergency or just landed at the wrong airport? Not that I know anything about the fight you are inquiring about but if it is a flight that landed at the wrong airport I have heard similar stories.

When flying out of KEYE I have heard several stories about a commercial flight that landed KEYE by mistake rather than the intended destination of KIND. Makes for a good story on the ramp (since everyone and aircraft were safe) but I could never find any facts to support the stories. There WAS a flight that was going to KEYE and landed on a drag strip that the pilot had mistaken for the airport just a few years ago. Reminded me of the wrong airport blunder story. :eek:
 
Kallitta DC-8 landed at Tawas, MI about 8 miles south. 3500' strip, flew it in and flew it out.

It was a BAX Global DC-8 back in 2000 going to Timco at OSC. Tawas is 4800' long and can be mistaken as OSC if you aren't paying any attention.

There are some pics out there somewhere of it. I am sure PUNISHER will be along to set the facts straight kind of like the fact that Kalitta has 1 "L".

it was tawas, it was a DC-8, it was going the place Kalitta now owns, so I missed on the lenght.
 
Well, technically, it wasn't a BAX Global DC-8...

OSC's ATIS reported that snow removal was under way there, but both airfields were undergoing snow removal at the time, and as the crew was cleared to land at OSC, the equipment happened to pull off the runway at Tawas, which played into the mistaken identity of the field. I don't know whether any of the folks on board had been to OSC before, but I seem to recall that they hadn't.

Personally, I think the crew did a fine job getting the airplane stopped on that short runway under the conditions, and as I recall, it was a -63 series aircraft landing at 35 flaps for stage III noise.

The Chief headed up to get the airplane out of there, but spent a few days waiting for the winds to pick up enough to be able to take off. Yes, the crew is still with us.

Unless I heard wrong the PFE on that flight is not still with us.(RIP) I heard through the grape vine and am hoping maybe I heard wrong. He is or was a hell of a nice guy and if true I was sorry to hear about it.

Whoops, that may be a "my bad", as I'm probably incorrect as to who was oiling that day. Unfortunately, I believe you're right. The intended point was that the crew didn't get fired for it. And "us" is ATI.

Yes, It's Rick's Boatyard Cafe. Smells GREAT eh? :D Nice place, foods good. The mounted sailfish all over the place helps you forget you are in corn country. They had a small jazz trio playing at the bar inside when I was there. I don't know if that is common for the place or not. I think there is hotel across the shopping center about a mile up the road. Maybe it was a Red Roof Inn but not real sure. Maybe a google map could find it for you. Rick's looks like a place to make it an alright overnight trip for that $300 burger.

Thanks for the link - that was a great article! Hadn't seen it before. I still seem to remember that it took a few days to get out of there as they needed a fairly hefty headwind.
 
Damn, I wish I could find that pic of it. We had it posted in the pilot lounge back when it happened, it was from above the airport.
 
There is a pic of the BAX(ATI) DC-8 at 6D9 on the cork board inside the terminal building. It's very impressive with it's outboard engines and wings hanging over the grass of the runway.

It was pretty amazing they were able to stop her. The entire runway was patchy thin snow and ice, at best.

I remember them having to wait about 3-5 days for enough head wind to take off. They used about 3000 feet for their roll.

During the takeoff they damaged several runway lights and it was not until spring until Marv would know if the runway had been damaged from weight. Luckily the frozen earth prevented any would be damage to the runway.

Sure ya could:
Give it a light weight, cool temps and some head-wind and it will land like a Citation.
