Notices were sent out today.....don't have the exact number yet.

FCL: 08-64 DATE: 8/25/08
EXPIRES: 11/25/08

TO: All Crewmembers
FROM: Mike Gerdes, Sr. VP Flight Operations
SUBJECT: Furloughs
As we have discussed in previous crew meetings, we find ourselves at the point of requiring the furlough some of our crewmembers. We gave notice to crewmembers today that they will be furloughed October 25, 2008 due to the reduction in flying for our largest customer, DHL. We also provided Teamster’s Local 1224 with the required WARN Notification, as required by law, for this reduction in force.
We all knew this day would come eventually after the DHL announcement of the reduction of flying. It is a reality that our fellow employees are now being directly affected by this change in our business. Many other company employees also received their notice today as well.
We have taken a number of voluntary furloughs since the MOU with the Teamsters was signed. Those voluntary requests did, in this instance, reduce the final involuntary furloughs on a one-for-one basis. Early retirement requests were also granted. We thank those who took the voluntary option and early retirement in support of their fellow crewmembers.
This is the only crewmember furlough planned for 2008. Please note that to comply with the 60 day notification requirements, we will give notifications to affected crewmembers in the latter part of 2008 that might be furloughed in January and/or February 2009. Position surplus bids will be forthcoming as we have excess in certain areas that require the initiation of training.
Future plans indicate the continued reduction of DC9 flying by DHL in 2009, with the elimination of all DC9 flying by mid-2009. This will require additional furloughs in 2009, which are estimated at just over 200 additional crewmembers. When the fleet plan for the B767 aircraft becomes available from DHL, we will review how that plan impacts our future staffing. Currently, after all DHL flying has ceased in the future, the ACMI airline plan calls for approximately 17 aircraft and 170 crewmembers.
Our thoughts are with those crewmembers and their families affected by this reduction in DHL flying. If any of you have any questions, feel free to call or write. Thank you for continued professionalism and as always, fly safe.

Can someone post what date of hire corresponds to #170 on the ABX seniority list? Thx.

ABX: 235 employees to lose jobs in 2 months

Most of the 235 ABX Air employees who are losing their jobs because of cutbacks by cargo shipper DHL have volunteered to depart, reducing the number of involuntary layoffs needed, ABX management said Monday, Aug. 25.
A total of 205 employees who volunteered to leave ABX Air are among the 235 employees being given 60-day advance notification of loss of their jobs, said Gene Rhodes, ABX's corporate director of labor relations.
Managers were personally notifying the employees on Monday and Tuesday that their last day of work will be on Oct. 23 or 24, Rhodes said. Those departing include 197 aircraft maintenance employees, 26 pilots and 12 administrative employees, he said.
ABX said the Wilmington job cuts are the first to result from DHL's May 28 announcement that it will hire United Parcel Service to handle sorting and flying of DHL air cargo in the United States. UPS plans to handle the work at its Louisville, Ky., hub, which Ohio officials have said could wipe out at least 8,200 jobs by the end of 2009 at DHL's Wilmington air freight hub, the region's largest employer.
ABX currently operates DHL's Wilmington hub and sorts and flies cargo from there across the United States, under contract to DHL. DHL, owned by Deutsche Post World Net of Bonn, Germany, has said it is negotiating what could be a 10-year contract with UPS in hopes of reducing DHL's $1 billion annual losses in the U.S. shipping market.
ABX management asked for voluntary departures last week in an effort to reduce the number of involuntary layoffs. The departures are necessary because DHL has begun reducing the number of aircraft it is requiring ABX to fly in its service, and further reductions are expected, ABX said. The reductions involve 23 of the older DC-9 aircraft that ABX flies for DHL.
The number of ABX employees volunteering to leave was higher than the company expected, Rhodes said. DHL's May announcement of its plans to switch to UPS has given ABX employees time to consider options, he said.

My condolences, gentlemen. I know some of you, others I have not met. I will be joining you soon. I truly hope this will turn out to be a good thing for all of us in the end.

If I don't see you before you go, good luck.
