WASHINGTON, Aug 15 (Reuters) - Southwest Airlines Co (LUV.N: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) has failed to convince the U.S. government to reduce a $10.2 million fine proposed for alleged safety violations, the Federal Aviation Administration said on Friday.


The agency sent a letter to the carrier earlier this week saying the civil penalty would remain at the proposed amount, an FAA spokeswoman said.


The FAA leveled the fine this past spring for alleged maintenance violations. Southwest sought to lower the penalty in meetings with FAA officials.


The FAA on Thursday proposed a $7.1 million fine against American Airlines, a unit of AMR Corp (AMR.N: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz), for alleged safety violations. American called the penalty excessive. (Reporting by John Crawley; editing by Carol Bishopric)
