Open time with furloughs

I am just curious to see what everybody thinks about picking up open time and accepting junior assignments while there are pilots on furlough.

I am totaly against it for many reasons but I am wondering what this community thinks of it.

I think it's despicable, but there are a hell of a lot of guys that do it. Just watch the trips as they drop into open time, they disappear in a heartbeat.

Well I spoke with a few fellow RJ right seaters where I work, and almost threw up in my mouth when guys said they didn't understand what was wrong with picking up open time with people on furlough.

Talk about a me-first disgusting attitude.

Like a previous poster said, it's all about 'ME'.

I don't support it. It keeps folks on the street. HOWEVER, it really underscores how there is an utter lack of unity in the union.

With a strong union, if there was a rouge bunch 'grabbing' open time, with folks on the street, they'd come home to find every window in their house broken.

Next time, they loose a finger....

Next time, your wife gets roughed up...

Then your....never mind....

You get the idea.

A pilot will sell out in a nanosecond!

Mesa doesn't have anyone on furlough (yet).

Had to be another airline. Get your prejudices straight.

BTW, I don't think it's especially cool myself. On the other hand, those near the bottom are probably looking at being in round "two" of any additional furloughs, and may need the cash after lean living after a downgrade from CA to FO anyway. Plus . . if you WERE talking Mesa, those guys don't have any choice anyway.

Well if its was that important it would be in your conract or there would be a big push at the LEC level. Iv never heard anybody bring it up. I follow my contract to the letter good times or bad.
PS I maybe once a year I pick up high time to make my sch better or get days off.

I can't speak for other airlines but at my airline the company has the ability to junior man and draft pilots to cover the open trips after reserves have been exhausted - including worked into their days off. This means that the open trip WILL get covered no matter what.

While I can certainly understand the emotional reaction to picking up open trips while there are fellow pilots on furlough, the reality is that even with refusing to pick up trips they WILL be covered and WILL be flown as scheduled. My understanding is that some airlines do not have this ability to draft (force) pilots to fly uncovered trips and therefore pilots not picking up trips would have the desired effect.

Now if the union says "Do not pick up trips" I would be glad to comply with that, but don't blame other pilots for a situation that management is totally to blame for and has caused. If you don't want to fly extra that's fine, I support that, but don't look down your nose at other pilots trying to provide for their families.
