This whole "my airline can be up your airline" crap is cracking me up.
First off, EVERY airline is in trouble if fuel doesn't go down, even SWA at some point.
My feeling is what is starting to happen is only the tip of the iceberg. This whole industry is a big chess game right now. As was pointed out in another thread, DAL thought USAir was going under after 2001, a few years later, DAL was panicking because they were in danger of being bought out by USAir. The DAL/NWA deal looks good to me from the sidelines, but their are some pretty smart financial types that say it will be a disaster, who knows? Nobody on here, that's for sure.
Could UAL shut down? Maybe, or for all we know they could sell their Asia flying to CAL and buy the merged DAL/NWA. I'm not speculating that, just saying anything can happen. The six legacy airlines are going to be shuffled around in the way that will make the most financial sense for a few.
What is happening to the airline industry is all dependant on behind the scenes big money and I'm guessing that their is crap going on that none of us are aware of or could comprehend.
I don't think any of us will recognize this industry in 5 years. Anybody feeling cocky about their airline is setting themselves up to eat crow.
Good luck to all.
