As soon as Southwest starts raising ticket prices to cover fuel costs...their competitors will too.

I am just wondering how much longer Southwest can keep up before they have to try new ways to do their business. It currently thrives on consumer's perception of "Southwest is the cheapest and always offers the best deal" Their fares are already up to where legacy carriers are and sometimes charging even more. What else can Southwest do to increase revenue when legacy carriers fight vigorouly to make up lost domestic revenue with stuff like premium traffic overseas and cargo. It's going to take a lot more than expanding to Hawaii and Mexico.

You're absolutely right. This company is nothing more than a bait & switch scheme. I predict we will be next into Ch11 & beyond!

SWA has raised ticket prices to cover SWA's fuel costs. They just haven't raised prices enough to allow their competitors to cover their fuel costs. Simple, really.

Plus it has the added benefit of allowing mgmt to sing the financial blues to all the labor groups in negotiations this year.:bawling:

The answer would obviously be to cut any costs that you can, but more likely a company would be looking to raise the cost of tickets to pass on the cost to the customer. Maybe with all the bottom-feeders going out of business, there will be room for the industry to actually raise prices to market value.

Dude....Your first post and you are calling Aloha, ATA, Champion, and Frontier "bottom feeders". Im sure you got your eyes set on one of those battleships that are floating so high above everyone else. Your gonna have a wakeup call coming out of the service and getting into this industry! 2000 hours in the F-18 huh? Just stay in and get your retirement dude! At least you will have a O-5/6ish govt pension to fall back on when the "bottom feeder" you go to work for goes titsup. Best of luck in whatever you decide to do though.

Swa is in (or shortly will be...) contract negotations with 4 labor unions. There is going to be plenty of negative news and then, in the end, they will make money again.
