Cash-Strapped Airlines: Who’s Next to Fall?

Ken Sweet
FOXBusiness

Aloha Airlines and ATA Airlines might just be the first of several airlines to go belly up.

All the major airlines are putting increasingly larger amounts of cash on their balance sheets in order to weather the economic downturn. But the fear among airline analysts is that these cash levels will last only so long, given oil sitting north of $100 a barrel. And the current credit crunch makes it more difficult for airlines to borrow to raise money when the cash coffers run empty.
“We found that all the airlines would survive 2008 but cash levels would be at alarming levels for the majority of the carriers if current trends continue through 2009,” said Ray Neidl, an airline analyst with Calyon Securities, in a note to investors.
The problem for these airlines, from small to big carriers, is the credit crunch and liquidity troubles that hit Wall Street investment banks like Bear Stearns (BSC: 10.41, -0.13, -1.23%) are now affecting them. Banks are hesitant to lend to all but the strongest borrowers, and the issues facing many air carriers make them a higher credit risk.

That means the carriers must raise fares and surcharges because they are unable to handle even a short term increase in fuel costs, industry experts said. The average amount of cash on an airline’s balance sheet to cover expenses has risen from a historical level of 12% to more than 30%.
“The amount of cash these airlines have on their balance is unprecedented,” said Bob Mann, an airline industry consultant. “These airlines cannot gamble with any loss at all. If they carry a loss on a route, they see that as money gone forever at the moment.”
How bad is it? Both Neidl and Mann said all of the airlines could file for bankruptcy if a major event akin to the Sept. 11 terrorist attack happens again.
In an industry with such massive fixed costs like airlines, the biggest variable cost for the industry is fuel. For every penny that the price of barrel oil gains, the whole industry loses approximately $19 million, according to Mann and other experts.
In order to cover the massive costs of $100-plus oil, and the lack of ability for the airlines to raise more cash, most airlines have turned to fuel and various other surcharges. The most recent example was announced Thursday, when Northwest Airlines (NWA: 9.65, -0.51, -5.01%) said it would add $115 to $155 one way to each international ticket.

The airlines just cannot handle these volatile costs anymore," Mann said. "It just gets worse for them as oil keeps rising because it's also affecting their customers as well. They have to decide if they want to heat their homes or go to

Here is the last paragraph....

-------It won't let me print the last part. It says Delta and NWA could manage $120 a barrel oil.

Bye Bye--General Lee

Only if they have a load factor of 100% to Fantasy Land.

thats why they need to merge with $100 a barrel oil.

Maybe you should verify that article first. I see it came from FOX Business. They aren't the sharpest bunch.;)

Back up why you think the other guys (CNN, MSNBC, etc..) are sharper.

Just wondering.

because CNN at least tries to be impartial. Journalism is a fundamental control in our society- and like everything republican we've outsourced Fox news to Murdoch for an agenda that is not our own.

I'm sure there are some that like to get news that they agree with... News is though, that's not real news if it always contains at least a subtle slant. It's propoganda by definition. And NewsCorp's very good at propoganda- and WE the People have not been very good at getting rid of it.

Someone has been watching waaayyyy too much "John Adams" on HBO. Pretty damn invigorating. They ALL s*ck. Someone will be right the day I lose my job. The bobbleheads are only a bunch of chuckleheads.

CNN impartial. Thanks for the laughs. Lou Dobbs, real impartial.

I'm not defending Fox. I like Fox over the others however they do blow things out of proportion sometimes. However, it seems that Dems always blame Fox for all the problems in media. It's okay to have other voices, not just liberal. Let's face it Dan Rather seems alittle partial. Thank God he off the air for the most part.

Wha?

Fox News means "Hot Chics" in Aramaic. I personally don't even turn up the volume.

Instead of reading the article lets bash fox. Come on people, they are no more bias than any of the other agenda setting media. Its one guys opinion, and like azzholes, everyone has them.

If I want to watch car chases and bail hearings for teachers that have sex with their students, I watch Fox News. Or if I want to just check out some hot chics.

If I want to hear about how neither Democratic candidate can get the required number of delegates or once again what the #4,874th reason we are failing in Iraq is, I watch CNN.

As to the thread title:

General, I can’t believe you would waste your time to post such an article. What does the price of oil have to do with these airlines staying in business? Sure the price of oil affects every commodity. But balance comes with a price increase of such commodity. Maybe an over simplfication but once again the carriage is pulling the horse. Airlines are STILL trying to justify selling low cost tickets in an increasingly demanding pricing environment. Since when do you run a business by underpricing your product, depending instead on the credit market “borrowing” to suppliment your income? Because the “market” says “price a seat at $79.00?” Normal business practice is to pass the added cost to the consumer. Competition you might say! Well here is the bottom line: promise less but deliver more! Lets not be fooled. Global demand is out stripping supply by all consensus including that of the ATA. You will create loyalty from this increasing DEMAND. Oh yes there’s inflation too!! Well there’s government intervention. Ever wonder why oil is left out when they consider core inflation? Another example of masking the truth (probabily why the worth of the dollar is bordering third world standards). Besides, remember “deregulation?” Free market driving prices and market entrance/availability bla, bla. The tax guys don’t hesitate to squeeze their fair share of revenue out of each seat in additional fees through new regulations and legislation. What for? To foster “competition”? But the consumer doesn’t care because they can fly coast to coast for 79 bucks!

Name another business that don’t pass cost on? The gas stations do and you don’t drive less because you paying more at the pump.Christ! Even food prices have gone up! Do you eat less because the transports continue to increase delivery prices to off set the higher cost. Basic need you might argue. Heck it cost more to sleep in a hotel room or to take a taxi from the airport to the city than what it cost to get there by air. Increasing the price of goods and services provided is commom sense. The lending market is there to grow your business. Procuring high expenditure items such as new facilities, airplanes, routes etc, etc.

These LCC have only themselves to blame. Driving the cost down of an otherwise expensive commodity to produce. These business managers, CEO and below, ONLY keep grinding away at cost, the result of which doesn’t surprise me today. 1000’s of cancelled flight, million of dollars in fines, more scrutiny from the federales, to do what? KEEP TICKET PRICES DOWN?.

When u read BS like that you realise that one no longer needs even a highschool education to get an MBA. The real failure rest with the lack of innovative brains in the industry today. We employ business managers today who could bearly manage their own personal economics muchless that of an airline business. If they were held to the high accountability standards as us pilots, then maybe our economic situation will be much more favorable.

So General, quit posting such nonsense!

I actually don't mind O'Reilly bc like Lou Dobbs he's commentary... It's the slant and marching orders that are contained in the basic news from FOX that is disturbing.

But it was the republicans who got rid of the law that held media accountable to their content.

Personally- i get all my news from Stephen Colbert
