First Officers get Business class benefits and Captains get First Class. It's not like in the USA. Tickets are purchased from company travel at various discount rates similar to ID90 or ZED. One firm annual leave ticket is given per year. At various length of service milestones additional space available tickets can be obtained almost free. DXB-JFK round trip in First Class is about $500 last time I looked, probably more now with fuel surcharges. DXB-LHR used to be around $200 in Business Class and maybe $250 in First. In Feb I bought a Business class Round trip to HKG for $214. First Class to Beijing and back was $268 last August.

Space available. Unlimited for your immediate family. No buddy passes.

Annual leave tickets are based on the Fiscal Year which runs April 1st to March 31st. I believe you can use them after 6 months. If you joined in May then you would get a prorated amount of the 42 days for the Fiscal year and those can be used in that year.

The trips are so diverse and rosters so different that one can't point to a typical roster and say, "this is what it is" Average amount of days off? = 12, not including vacation or rest days. Emirates will make you do a pre-employment dental exam with your dentist and refund your costs. On the piece of paper that you give your dentist states that all major work ie. (fillings, crowns, wisdom teeth removal) needs to be done before joining.

Emirates is a dream flying job and the type of flying they do is exactly what I have always wanted. BUT after being in DXB I can say I could not handle living there. The internet is restricted, TV sucks, not much to do without spending money, and you HAVE to have a hobby. Do not get me wrong some people get along over there but to me it was not just an adjustment to living in a new area but a change in lifestyle.

You gotta get some stamp or a letter from your current employer who will certify flight times or get a Notary to stamp it.I listen to other people and tried to explain that my company and the FAA refused to certify the logbook. Not having that stamp is one reason I was rejected.

So which is it... did you choose not to go or were you rejected?

I'm guessing rejected.... sour grapes, dude.

Having been there quite a few times, I enjoy it. Others do not.

I will say this, many of the people I know who have worked there or the region last about seven to ten years and then return home. Not all but the majority.

This I do not understand. Usually if your paperwork is not in order on the first day you are sent home.

Not necessarily so, could be, but he does raise some valid points.

I know of a family who moved (non-aviation) there 18 months ago. The wife and the children have since returned leaving the husband to finish his commitment. It works for some people and not for others.

That's a bit harsh. I would say rejection and then backwards rationalization - which is natural. I think living there could definitely be difficult for some people. Inflation is incredible. Still, if offered a right seat in a 777, most people would find a way to make it work (at least for the short term or until living in Dubai drove them NUTS).

EK would be smart to open foreign bases like CX if they want to attract and retain the best pilots. That won't happen because they always want to have FULL CONTROL.

She is on your own dime over there and don't let the hotel resturant tell you that she can't use your 100 dirham voucher for dinner because the front desk will deduct her food from the 100 dirhams no problem. Good Luck!
