ALOHA AIRLINES TO SHUT DOWN PASSENGER OPERATIONS AFTER
MARCH 31, 2008, ENDING A 61-YEAR TRADITION OF SERVICE TO HAWAII
HONOLULU – Aloha Airlines announced today that it will be shutting down its inter-island and
transpacific passenger flight operations. Aloha’s last day of operations will be Monday, March 31,
2008. On that day, Aloha will operate its schedule with the exception of flights from Hawaii to the West
Coast and flights from Orange County to Reno and Sacramento, and Oakland to Las Vegas.
Code-share partner United Airlines and other airlines are prepared to assist and accommodate Aloha’s
passengers who have been inconvenienced. For more information on United’s accommodation
options, contact United at 1-800-UNITED1 or www.united.com.
Passengers who do not wish to be re-accommodated by another airline should contact their travel
agent or credit card company to request a refund.
Effective immediately, Aloha will stop selling tickets for travel beyond March 31, 2008.
The shutdown of Aloha’s passenger operations will affect about 1,900 employees.
Aloha also announced that its air cargo and aviation services units will continue to operate as usual
while the U.S. Bankruptcy Court seeks bids from potential buyers. On March 27, 2008, Saltchuk
Resources, Inc., announced its intention to buy Aloha’s air cargo business.
“This is an incredibly dark day for Hawaii,” said David A. Banmiller, Aloha’s president and chief
executive officer. “Despite the groundswell of support from the community and our elected officials, we
simply ran out of time to find a qualified buyer or secure continued financing for our passenger
business. We had no choice but to take this action.
“We deeply regret the impact this will have on our dedicated employees who have made Aloha one of
the best operating airlines in the country.
“Aloha Airlines was founded in 1946 to give Hawaii’s people a choice in inter-island air transportation.
Unfortunately, unfair competition has succeeded in driving us out of business, bringing to an end a 61-
year-old company with a proud legacy of serving millions of travelers in the true spirit of Aloha.
”We realize that this comes as a devastating disappointment to our frequent flyers and our loyal
business partners who have supported this company for many, many years.”

And Fk the Mesa pilots who played a part in this. I use to take the position that they're just pilots going to work and they have no choice. But when you played a role in putting another airline out of business, one that was run superbly, you're part of the problem.

No different than Saudis passive (and sometimes active) accpetance of extremist islam. While they may not be the ones actually doing the bombings, their tacet approval of it perpetuates the problem.

I used to not subscribe to the philosophy above but, in this case, I agree.

It's hard to accuse ANY Regional of "lowering the bar" but Mesa has that mantle now.

Freight Dog, I hope I can adequetly convey my feelings here as a Hawaiian Pilot. Frankly it feels like a kick in the stomach. I have some very good freinds at AQ and this feels like a personal loss. The Hawaii market has always been a wild one and Hawaiian has been on the ropes itself, fortunatly not when Go was illegally operating and oil went through the roof. Another time and it could have been us. Hawaii should be served by HAL and AQ, not Go. A lot of people feel that way and not just airline employee's. My wife doesn't work in the airline industry and she is all the time hearing resentment towards Go from the general public. In a nutshell, this really sucks.

Best of luck to the Aloha crews. Does this leave Go as the only option for inter-island travel (besides Hawaiian)?

Did you know there are people who spend $50k+ on training, then they go PAY to be in the right seat of a turboprop? Just so they can log turbine time. Sad but true.

And there are thousands of these people at every major airline. ALPA is just as much to blame.

This is going to be the case this time around. Any airline in cash trouble isn't going to be able to find additional cash to keep operations going. Investment money has dried up.

I considered applying to Aloha a few years back after taking an Aloha flight from California to Maui. I was very impressed with the operation and the crew. This is a shame and I wish everyone luck.
 
I've been through 3 bankruptcies and maybe looking at 4, I feel your pain.

Aloha Airlines, a very proud tradition and unique history. Hang in there brothers and sisters, it isn't over yet.

We may be in line together, I'd be honored.

When we taxi by you folks in HNL, you always make a point to waive at us (Hawaiian also) that is the true spirit of Aloha. The best of luck my friends
 
I will miss seeing you guys doing the channel visual while holding short of 8L. Hickam/HNL will never be the same.

J.O is not done yet! He will keep trying to run Hawiian out of business so he owns the market.He has also started his own little airline over in China which is lowering the bar for people looking to do contract work overseas.

I know that many of you know some of us. This is a very small industry indeed.

Most of us are looking for other jobs. You can help us by passing resolutions within your unions to offer furloughed Aloha pilots preferential interviews, or pass any job leads.

As for me, I'll try to find local work in 91/135 world. I know many corporate operators are somewhat biased against airline guys, so if I can't find any work, I'll definitely take you up on your offer, PCL - ATL is a much shorter commute than HNL. :)
