Airlines: Delta aims to outsmart cheaters
This past weekend, Delta began putting red tags on approved carry-on luggage for international flights. It's the first airline to try to tamp down on cheaters—(You know who you are!)—who ignore an airline's carry-on luggage limits.
Items that are found by flight attendants and that are not red-tagged will be removed for gate check. No fines are being put in place, though, for breaking the rules.
For its overseas flights, Delta allows each passenger to bring one bag whose length, width, and height adds up to less than 45 inches and whose maximum weight is 40 pounds. It also allows each passenger to carry an additional, smaller item, such as a purse or laptop bag.
Many travelers flout the rules, carrying aboard additional items that clog up overhead compartments. These rule-breakers cause problems for other travelers. When other, rule-abiding passengers board an airplane at the end of the line, they often find there is not enough room for their items in storage. Their carry-on bag must then be checked at the gate. If this has ever happened to you, and you have medicine or other important items in your "legal" carry-on bag, the experience of having your bag gate-checked can be infuriating.
And Delta told the Atlanta Journal Constitution that it has no plans to start the policy on domestic flights.

good..about time! Its ridiculous that it takes about 20 minutes to get off a plane now days because everyone puts everything and their grandma in the overhead bins. Just this week, had 5 folks delay a flight I was on due to carrying full size roller bags onto the CRJ-900..talk about funny trying to watch them shove it in. What was more disappointing was the gate folks allowing them to try to get on board with that knowing there is no way in hell it would fit.

I usually gate check my overnight bag, but what about Deadheaders and the commuters who do not gate check. If we are talking about the RJs and T-props thats one thing, but at most mainline carriers you have to go to bag claim to pick up your gate-checked bag. The rampers won't bring em up usually and you can't just go outside to get em. ( even with a valid airline ID)

Just a thought.

Otherwise I would be 100% for it. A hockey-duffle should not have to fit in an overhead bin.

It's for the international flights...not domestic.

should be.... 757 JFK/ATL a couple of days ago had 35 plus empy seats and the overheads were competely full! Almost eveyone had coats, very small bags and all the other stuff that goes under the seat!!! F/A's kept making the PA to put that suff under the seats so the big stuff could go in the overheads. Pax do not listen at all.

whaaaaaa, pax don't listen. waaahuaaaawhaaa.

TO bad if I want to take my roller bag, my briefcase and my laptop with I will. If airlines really listened to what passengers wanted they might make some money. Instead they are going to tell you what to do, when to do it, and how you will do it.
I will not fly on an US. owned airline to any over seas destination. The rest of the world knows what it takes to get the customers repeat business.
so f off delta. and If am I am forced to ride you guys, watch me sneak on my bags. and then laugh about it when we are airborne,

Sigh....... now I feel better ,

Good points. I was on DL the other day from Europe back to JFK. I was in Business Elite, full fare DH. Service was atrocious! Old pissed off flight attendants take out their problems on the paying customer! Yelling at a few when they would not stow their TV monitor and so on. What a joke compared to my 2 hour DH on Iberia in Business Class, where the FA took my carry on and offered to stow it for me, offered me a menu with a selection of very good menu options and enough wine and cheese to last me the day. Oh, and she was smoking hot! All on a 2 hour flight!

The US airlines have a LONG way to go to match the level of international carriers. If DL thinks their new 777LR with lie flat seats is going to save them, they are dead wrong. Its all about the quality of customer service from the FA's that make the most difference, and with a bunch of tired old grumpy fat doucche bags sneering at the customers who pay their wages, I doubt this will happen anytime soon.

The funny thing was when I left JFK I saw a group of new hire FAs doing their orientation. The looks on their face was priceless!

Unfortunately some of these customers may have thought they purchased a ticket on a full sized aircraft and not a stretched business jet. These customers could have been the regular traveler not expecting to be crammed into scaled down seat for the next 2-3 hours. Could have been the businessman who purchased a business class ticket only to have an ERJ or CRJ show up. CRJ-900 overhead bin space barley fits a laptop computer case. That is an insult to the traveling public. Bigger insult is when you have almost 90 people lined up in the jet bridge after deplaning to retrieve all of the planside baggage. Takes another 30 minutes to get off the jet bridge. If they truely had full size luggage it would not have fit in the overhead bin of the largest aircraft. Shame on the legacies to let scope get so far out of whack so that the only one that benefits is the management. Management floods the market with frequency to try to maintain market share. Mainline pilots complain because of the errosion of their flying, pay and quality of life. Customers complain because of the ATC delays. Regional pilots complain about the pay and quality of life issue but they need to fly to get their hours to progress up the chain if they choose. The natural progression has been distorted beyond recognition and the lowest common denominator is becoming the largest common denominator for domestic ASMs' for some of the legacies. Regain SCOPE. Regain you power to negotiate. Regain a progression in the profession. Regain some of the quality in the product that is provided to the customer. (Would you rather sit for 2-3 hours in a 90 seat RJ or a MD88/737?)

1. Your keyboard has an enter key. It's there for a reason. :smash:

2. Did you read the article? It's for international flights. You know, the kind that is on a real airplane and not a stretched business jet. Although I find it funny that Delta originally said it was to comply with TSA regulations and now is saying it is to speed up the boarding and deplaning process.

Thank you for policing the forums to ensure that all abide by the rules.

My response was in regards to the other posts on the topic.

Sorry if you did not read the other posts before getting to mine.

I will consider myself duly chastized.

I was not certain if I was to indent or to numerically align my response. Hope this meets your requirements. Have a great day

Well waaaahuaaaa! I want a cheap ticket! I want to pay less today than I did 20 years ago and still get a meal, wine, and TV! I want tickets so cheap that the airline has to rob their own labor and take away retirements to pay for my cheapskate spoiled self! And I want a young, fresh, happy FA to smile at me and smell like flowers too!
Get lost.

Yep that's what the public wants. But too bad for them.
I however will not be treated like some trash that has imposed on the day of Gate agents and FA's.
Maybe the airlines should charge what it cost to do business. and not worry so much about trivial things like "you have to much Carry on"
Maybe they should spend time and effort trying to improve revenue and not so much time on squeezing the employee's and bashing the customers.
It is simple. raise prices to cover cost. If you can't compete you go out of business.

Funny you should mention this....My wife and I flew on Lufthansa from PDX to FCO last summer - non rev. We were shocked with how strict they were with carry on luggage. In fact they do almost exactly what DL is planning to do but even more - not only do they tag each carry on to make sure you don't have too many, they also weigh them. We had to shuffle stuff between each of our bags so that our carry on's were within limits. On the way back from Italy, our bags were heavier from the souvenirs. We were not allowed to carry them on at all. These were 22" roller bags by the way.

I guess you should include LH in your rants along with the US carriers.

Just for the record: I re-read the article. I see DL will also be weighing carry on bags. So they are going to be just like LH (I think LH had a lower weight limit though)
