I was wondering what kind of headset works for the DC9 or the 747 at NWA: single plug or dual plug?

Thanx!

Two Jack. All NWA aircraft have headsets in the aircraft (Telex 850s) and are in good condition (if they haven't been swimming in the bait well in the DC-9).

You can use your own (I have an older Sony), and some guys use ANC headsets or "molded" units, but the aircraft sets work fine for me.

All AC are 2 plug except the 'bus. You can buy an adapter if you have your own.

Just to pick a nit... they're Telex 750s, I believe, at least on the -9. The 850 is the ANR version.

Is the DC-9 loud? Should I keep my bose?

Back in my day, we just slowed down to 160 kias (I THINK), popped the window, gave hand signals to the tower, and watched for the light gun. We liked it that way.

You know, the problem with radios is that everyone else knows what you're doing too. Besides, I'm not English Proficient so I prefer the hand signals.

Seriously though, in the 9 you can talk to each other just fine at a normal volume. Once you put your Bose on, it's just two dudes flying close formation with hand signals.

The DC-9 pilots don't use interphone to talk to one another, so if you show up wearing a Bose, you will have a hard time with checklists & conversation with the CA. Unless you get a window with a squeal, the 9 is actually fairly quiet.

Ah, yes, the squealing window. I've found that one solution is to soak a few galley wipes in the residual type 1 fluid floating in the bait well, open the window and lay them in carefully and then close it. Works like a champ! (And if it doesn't, then you can spend an hour or so thinking about where you went wrong, then pull them out at the next station and try a new strategy. Makes the time fly, I tell ya.)

As far as noise is concerned, the DC-9 is pretty quiet compared to the 737. I believe that the 707, 727 and 737 had the same exact nose/window arrangement, and they just get noisy above .75. It must be a Boeing thing: The 747 is noisy too. They didn't design a quiet cockpit until the 75/76.

This thread reminds me of the 727 crew that was walking over to a watering hole on a layover:

Captain: Sure is windy today!

F/O: It's not Wednesday, it's Thursday!

F/E: Yeah, I'm thirsty too!
