AirTran backs off from hostile takeovers

February 4, 2008

AirTran Holdings Inc. is still smarting from its failed attempt to snap up Midwest Air Group through a hostile takeover last year. The Orlando company, the parent of low-cost carrier AirTran Airways, doesn't plan to look for new prey any time soon. "You won't see us do another hostile deal in the future," AirTran President and Chief Executive Officer Bob Fornaro told analysts last week. "One of the things we learned about buying another carrier is, it's hard to do a hostile deal. To some degree, they [Midwest executives] made a decision to sell their company to anybody but us." Last week, regulators gave final approval to a Midwest takeover group that includes Northwest Airlines.

How many jobs will be lost now? Kinda sad for Midwest.

and air tran. slowing growth, selling airplanes so any future growth is at the back of the boeing line.
I believe you left out the word possibly. AirTran has the ability to adapt quickly. I sure we will do what it takes to remain profitable.

I think BF's comments shouldn't come as a surprise. I just focus on the word "hostile". I'm sure there are some willing partners out there, and that is always a possibility. You get more bees with honey than vinegar.
