I did a forum search and found the subject of satellite pilot bases such as HNL, LAX, and FLL for the next contract.

BS or what?

50% of the pilots wanted satellite bases. 50% of the pilots didn't want them.

98% of the pilots didn't know that there was a vote.

Sincerely,

B. Franklin

too funny.

If it cost the company a dollar you will not see any satellite bases!

I heard Jet Blue will have a satellite base in Oakland this summer. No reserves, if you get sick you are required to find someone to cover your trip. I really like this idea and wish we had this at CAL, but I sincerely doubt this will ever happen. DAL flight attendants also have satellite bases.

DL FA's have the same thing. If an FA has to call in sick they have to find a replacement themselves. The FA's at the sat. base have kinda a rolling reserve amongst themselves.

They seem to like it..sounds like crap to me. No pressure to fly sick, right? It's a good thing the B6 guys have a strong local union. :)

What a bunch of crap. Your job as a pilot is not to crash...not to staff the airline if your unable to fly....total crap.

I also read, when asked 94% of respondents wanted free beer. Is this relative to satellite bases, no.

I've got no sympathy for a work group that is opposed to union representation. I can't believe the DL FAs haven't organized after the last 3 years.

The question is why would they open those bases. There is almost no money in domestic flying, unless its an international feed.

There is a side letter in the current contract covering the investigation of opening satellite bases. The study was done and a few bases (never published) were identified as feasable but ALPA and the company decided to wait and restudy the issue after PBS was running smoothly. So, of course, since the PBS system we have will never run smoothly, the issue will not come up again until it is discussed in contract negotiations.

It could happen but a lot of other things need to happen first.

Besides, if this merger insanity acutally comes to fruition, we'll have plenty of new bases. LAX, SEA, ORD, IAD...... :)

Not new hubs, just satellite crew bases.

Why? Potential savings or cost neutral as opposed to paying for lots of crew hotel rooms at some out stations. Need for more readily available reserve coverage (HNL).

CAL flight ops management toyed with the idea of MCO and LAX as virtual/satellite/actual bases, studied the idea for months. It was determined that a florida base, either FLL or MCO as the leading contenders, would require a varying number of pilots throughout the year. It would also take a chunk out of EWR flying mostly. A west coast domicile, virutal or otherwise, would be the best long term goal.
Concept was scrapped when wide body deliveries were not in the near future. When airframe 58 arrives, I would expect CAL to offer more domiciles as a result of growth.

I personally will never vote YES for ANY contract that has the promise of bases in certain locations tied to the collective bargaining efforts of the entire package.

If it makes economic sense for the company to open a base in LAX, etc., they will. If it doesn't, they won't.

Either way though, I ain't payin' for it.

It's just another big ass lure with treble hooks in it. Anybody who falls for it is an idiot.
