Legacy--pull out of domestic giving market share to WN and other low cost carriers, moving lift to international. 5-10 years Low cost carriers emerge in the lucrative international market, with no where left to run the Legacy carriers go the way of the dodo bird. ie. PanAm, Eastern, TWA
International low cost carriers are going to be knocking at the back door before many of us think. OPEN SKIES

I think you got it. Maybe consolidation is just a maneuver to be the last legacy to go extinct.

Doubt that. Ryanair threatened to do INTL routes from Europe, primarily because they were mad that the EU denied their request to buy AerLingus. They also said they might use A330s, when they have a Boeing fleet exclusively. They are the only ones to think about LCCs across the Atlantic, but let's look at their operation in Europe. They only go to airports that are out of the way, with low landing fees. Can you describe an airline in the US that just started the same thing? Skybus? How are they doing? Very unlikely anything will come across the pond in the LCC arena for a very long time. Openskies was welcomed by US carriers so they could get a foothold in LHR, that's it. Most of the large markets in the US are already slot constrained and gate constrained, with very little room to grow unless the foreign airlines want to go to Providence or Little Rock. If they do, well good for them!!

Bye Bye--General Lee

Ask two of the latest international startups (Silverjet and Maxjet) how that is/was working out for them. Lack of popular landing slots/gates, route network, a meaningful frequent flyer program combined with $100 a barrel oil make natural barriers to entry and profitability.

I'm not "Anti-Southwest" (or AirTran for that matter), but talk I hear on the line at Delta is "we'll make money overseas and let the LCC's have domestic."

That strikes me as so incredibly stupid. You never, ever give up market share! You'll never get it back!

Delta used to have all the gates AirTran has now in Atlanta. You think they'll be getting those back anytime soon?

Sorry, this sounds off-topic, but it goes along with the shrinking of domestic hubs in a merger.

Again, no ill-will to the pilots of any other carrier!!!
Market share isn't worth anything if your losing money flying those people.
