Wait a minute....you think management will give us a raise if we wear our hats? Dayum, if it's that easy, sign me up. NOT!

If you think wearing a hat will earn you respect, you will need to remove your hat, so you can get your bald head examined.

For those of us that understand CRM and team work - I always notice that when I interact with gate agents or ramp workers you get more friendly respect by having that stupid arrogant and Nazi like hat OFF..... of course AAI is guilty of having a few Ego tripping type A personality pilots and therefore that is why some of us unfortunately like the hat.

Like I said make the Hat optional for those few fools that get their wood row off of feeling superior to a Lav cleaner by wearing it.

And no we won't get a raise by wearing it.

Not to change the subject..But...What the frick are we doing about SAP2? Who gives a rats ass about a stupid lid??

Can we get an amen? They pay us to wear the hat. Who cares. Fix the contract and QOL issues, then worry about the freaking hat. And Iron your shirt you f***ing slob. And buy me a beer. And can we hope the steelers get crushed this weekend.

Gotta agree with “Rez’ on this one.

There was a time in this country when it was considered a privilege to fly on an airplane. Gentlemen passengers wore suits and ties and the ladies wore dresses. It cost a lot of money to fly back then. Not anymore.

Today tickets are cheap and dress codes do not exist. Passengers feel that they can look and act however they wish just because they paid a $49 fare.

Consider that we as pilots have taken it in the shorts for quite some time now with pay and benefit erosion. It’s easy to feel brow beat. There was a time when we were looked upon with respect. We have a skill that not too many other people posses and we were paid accordingly. This too has changed. Please remember however some fault lies with us.

The truly sad fact is that we as pilots have allowed ourselves to become part of the $49 crowd. We have lost many of the traditions that made this profession respected, dress codes included. No hats, no blazers, no ties, it goes on and on and where does it stop?

If we truly want to be paid and treated like a professional it’s time we act like one. Never forget that traditions were the foundation that made this the career choice we all envisioned. If that means wearing a hat, then do so with pride.

That some funny s-h-i-t right there.

I like the hat. Makes the uniform look good. I'm not short, bald or ugly, nor do I carry on a name-calling campaign against those who don't like the headgear.

Why such vitriol, fellas? The folks who make me chuckle are the guys who carry it around, like they're afraid to mess up their "John Edwards hair helmet" or something. If the CP strolls by are you going to put it on? Really, if you don't like it that's cool - have the balls to leave it at home.

Also, the "I'll-look/act-like-a-professional-when-they-pay-me-to" argument. I've never understood that. You took the job knowing what the requirements were and what the pay was, but now you're going to change the rules. Sounds like your professionalism is for sale. No offense meant, just an observation.

PS-As far as public expectations go, I don't care if you're a bleeding-heart member of move-on, the green party the black panthers and your "partner" is a minority and like you, "batting for the other team", and you hate whitey; you still want your airline Captain to look like Peter Graves in Airplane - with the hat.

Hey to break this to you but but the tradition you are referring to had us never wearing hats inside!

Losing the hat is a much needed sign of us sticking it to the man. We are like a bunch of fast food employees with some dorky hat on.

The only reason people don't like the hats is their ego's "I dont look cool in a hat" "I look like a sky cap"
These people will never see the how a pilot looks to a passenger, because they are to egosentric to get past "how do I look".

The proof of this is in this thread, how many complaints about the hat being too damn hot in the summer have you read? By the way I agree with that, it is too hot in the summer.

So if you hate the hat so much, at least be honest with yourself, and use the real reason, your own vanity.
In the meanwhile the profession will degrade further and further.
Before you start blasting me, the hat is just a symbol of many things that are destroying what's left of this profession.

Yawn.....Let me translate your thoughts........----Look I am an old, closed minded uneducated fool and if you don't do things the way I think is best then you are unamerican and some pretty boy blah blah blah Let me guess Your idea of CRM is the "Eastern way".

Who cares why: maybe someone doesn't want to mess their hair up or their head gets itchy in the summer or an FO is sick of grabbing for it everytime he gets up to do a Post flight.

Just make it Optional. Let me guess my no vote cost you 30 grand excuse me for trying to better my career.

PS i'm just trying to get your goat but you know I am right

-wear the hat
-dump the black sneakers
-get rid of the Etnies backpack
-learn how to tie a tie
-and iron a shirt
...and be a real Airline Pilot !

I would rather wear the hat than look like a TSA agent...but hey that is just me.

I cannot believe that people are getting their panties in a wad over wanting to lose the hat. Like others have said there are bigger issues to take care of than a stupid hat.

So would you be willing to give up pay, or reserve rules, or an extra day off to not have to wear the hat? Didn't think so.

You took the job knowing that you would have to wear a uniform. If you worried about your gelled up hair melting down your face then stop using gel, maybe use something like American Crew fiber.

Concentrate on the contract and QOL issues.

Wow, getting rid of the hat is really "sticking it to the man", how rebellious. Did you notice the sarcasm?

Could not have said it any better. If you Citrus guys don't wear a hat, you don't look any different than your fruity flight attendants.

Just make it Optional.
Why stop there then? How 'bout making the tie optional? The shoulder boards? Maybe we can make a windbreaker an option instead of the leather or blazer, then we can be just like Mesa. Hell, just make jeans and a wife-beater an option. If you're going to throw out one part of the uniform, why stop there?
Let me guess my no vote cost you 30 grand excuse me for trying to better my career.

I also voted NO. Not everyone that wants the traditional uniform is some old Eastern guy who voted YES.

All you negative hat people talk about bigger issues than the hat. Guess what people! I want it all, I want the hat, the pay, and the schedule! I'm not giving in on anything. BTW, when you argue, don't divert your attention away from the hat arguement by saying there are bigger issues at stake. It is not effective and defies logic. I'm sorry most of you think you're so ugly that something like loosing a hat is going to make a difference. Go break a f'n mirror!

So the hats go and then what? I can see it now...

"Excuse me Mr. Chief Pilot but I don't think that as a first officer I should have to wear three stripes."

"Um why?"

"Because I should not be made to feel inferior with three stripes on my shoulder when I am just as qualified as a captain. When I was in little league we all got to play regardless of our skills and we all got a trophy at the end of the season just for participating, and when I was at school my teachers did not grade with red ink, they used blue or green, and they wrote nice things like 'super' or 'good job' on my paper even if I got a lot of wrong answers, it made me feel good about myself. And my Mom always told me that I was the best and she always hung my papers and colorings on the refrigerator even if I got a 'D' on something, you know because it said 'good job'. I felt really good about myself, very positive."

"And sometimes when I didn't do my homework and the teacher got mad at me and gave me a zero I would have my mom call and complain and then the teacher would give me an extra week to do the assignment, and one day in high school I forgot my lunch money and my mom brought it to me, it was really neat, I always felt special. So I don't like wearing three stripes, I don't feel special, although my mommy told me I was super. So can we not wear any stripes at all?"

You are not there to look cool or the bomb or skillz or shizniz or whatever, you are hired to be a professional. Most pilots look like total 'tards anyway so losing a hat ain't going to help you. In fact it might cover up your crappy spike job or frosted tips that make you look like more of a dork.

Believe me I am all for f#$*ing off and doing some stupid crap and having fun, unfortunately I had to grow up and knock a lot of that crap off. And I realized that when I signed up for this career there were going to be a few things that I HAD to do. Kind of like what our drill instructors told us in boot camp in the Marines..."Recruits, U.S.M.C. stands for U Signed a MotherF$&^ing Contract..." Have a great night...heres to hoping Oklahoma loses tonight...back to the beer.

I find it amusing that we should wear our hats to union rallies and public picketing when we want to look like professionals, yet most folks don't want to wear them in their everyday jobs...think about that....

Strange, until this thread, I never really gave the hats a thought..........now.....KEEP THE HATS!!!!

Frankly, get rid of the brown leather jackets, too. Who the hell thought brown leather would look good with a blue uniform, black leather belts, and black shoes?????

I saw a Southwest pilot wearing a hat last week. I didn't think they had them.

Hats are optional at SWA, which, judging from the varied opinions on this thread, seems to be the best policy. If you think the hat makes you look like more of a professional and impresses your passengers, wear it. If you don't like wearing hats and feel it has no impact on the performance of your duties or your professionalism, don't. If you like to wear the hat, wear it for yourself; I'm pretty sure your passengers could care less...they care more about the customer service and getting to their destination on time. Do you feel better about giving your bags to a skycap or ordering a burger at BK because they are wearing a hat? Personally, I spend a lot of time in the morning shaving and buffing my dome, and do not like to deny women the pleasure of seeing it.

I say boots, jeans, white shirt and stripes, no tie, that the way I like it, and If I'm ferrying I just wear a sweater or a regular white shirt!!!

you wear the hat, it may or may not help your profession...

you don't wear it. certainly doesn't help....

Any questions?

Stop thinking "me"
Start thinking "us"

If you need to wear a hat to distinguish yourself from aircraft cleaners, you need help. You're also kidding yourself if you think your hat gives passengers a warm fuzzy about your skills. The passenger couldn't give a rats @ss what you wear, they just want the cheapest ticket. If you want an example; look at the Virgin America pilots. Totally non-traditional, but do you see passengers running from the plane?

Face it hat lovers, the only good excuse to wear your hat, is to cover your bald head.
...yer an idiot...warm fuzzy-Rats@ss and lookin at American Virgin Pilots...is that a gerbil in your kitbag...and what did you do with the guppie that makes him part of your name...did ya marry the lil slimey thing...
