Live in Denver and trying to choose an airline.
Looking at pay, upgrade time, number of pilots on books, start of the wave at United, Bottom of wave at Frontier. Hopefully new contract at United Jan 2010. Possible mergers. Does anyone have any good advice?

Yeah. Get a career that promotes you based on performance and skill, rather than the whims of seniroity.

But if you feel lucky go with Frontier so you can staple the United guys that are getting hired in this wave once the two merge in 15 years.

Get over it already Turtle! The man asked about a career at UAL vs Frontier not your personal issues with a new seniority list position!!!

Hi!

PS-I applied at AWA just before they stopped hiring, several years ago.

If you come to United and plan on living in DEN for your entire career, plan on being junior for a long time unless you want to commute. If you're thinking you want to fly widebodies some day (767 fleet and up), it is extremely senior in DEN vs. just about any other domicile. Ditto when you upgrade to narrowbody Captain.

Mergers? Who knows. It's complete and utter speculation- with either Frontier or UAL!

The new contract in 2010 (hopefully) will probably be industry leading, and I'm relatively confident of that. However, I'm also confident that whatever economic downturn follows the negotiation of said contract will drag our wages back down to whatever the latest flavor of LCC operators are paying, so I woudn't come to UAL (or any other major for that matter) thinking that they'll be able to sustain any gravity defying wage increases in the face of new and/or non-union carriers such as Virgin, Skybus, JetBlue, LCC-whoever, etc.

Good luck with your choice. Unless you have an urge to fly widebodies for some reason, I'd go with the guys who hire me first.

Hey WD, always makes my day to see the Pirate with the Bottle!

Why not apply to both and let the winds of fate decide....they be the same winds blowing this industry around anyway.

Hey Cliff.

It's going pretty well thank you. Was with AWA until we became LCC the new company with the old name. Keep an ear out on the radio for call sign CACTUS.

The pirate and I have a long history.

Thank you for the responces. I have a start date with United and Frontier offered me an interview. I was up front with Frontier about United and they still want to interview me. The HR guy ask me to come down look at them.

"Performance and skill" equals ass-kissing and brown-nosing. I'll stick with seniority, thanks.

It sounds like Frontier is getting beat up pretty bad by SouthWest in Denver. I know of a few guys who were furloughed from UAL and got hired at Frontier 4 years ago. These guys took a recall to UAL. They seemed to think that UAL would be around longer than Frontier. Hope that helps.

There were also a few that said "no thanks" to the recall....

(Didn't mean to make that sound like a "my airline is better" post. I'm just happy where I am.)

Then you're in a good position. Interview the interviewers. We have not just a few but many people here that have worked fro United in various capacities - at least one potential interviewer, even. Many have made F9 home, some have taken UA recalls. Some left F9 for the UA recall, and then quit UA to come back to F9. See how the culture fits you. The F9 interview process is unique and very telling about how the company is run.

Who know what the best choice will be? United's CEO is on a mission to merge, and I personally would not want to be the newest guy on the list at UAL. With that being said, it didn't work out to poorly for the most junior guy at Cactus, so once again you just never know.

The only thing I do know is that the flight crews at f9 are a true pleasure to work with and I have never had a schedule as sweet as I do here at Frontier. Our "leaders" claim we are profitable on swa routes. I know, I know, sounds like total bs but that is what they are saying. Some dumbazzes decided to start a wholly owned sub called lynx and it has erased at LEAST $10 million from the bottom line so far and they MIGHT be flying by the end of this quarter. Can you fricken believe someone hasn't been fired?

Regardless, wherever you get hired, good luck and try to enjoy the small things. Life is just too short.

Hi!

WD: I'm glad you're enjoying AWA/USAirways.

I hear Cactus a lot, since we fly in Houston/Ft. Worth/ABQ center a lot. We go to S. TX and MX a ton. Pretty often TX-West Coast and back.

I've been in ABQ for about a week. Paid ticket home on Wed for 10 days off.

Good Luck, and maybe I'll end up being your FO at US Airways, or somewhere else (Emirates?).

BT, As far as F9 goes, its a great place to work & the pilots you work with and schedules are outstanding. (been here <2 years & getting 17 to 19 off consistently)

I just talked to a furloughed guy that went back to UAL from F9 with about 3 or 4 years seniority. He went back for demographic reasons, the same reason your interested in F9. He mentioned he wouldn't be interested in UAL as a new hire. He wasn't very happy with the schedules, work rules or some of the crews he's been working with. He was especially unhappy about how much he's been sitting around between legs and the lack of days off.

Maybe UAL will continue to mature and ALPA will get them back to where they were a few years ago...and they can do it all over again.

G/Luck with your decision, I would interview with F9 and see what happens. If you get hired you'll have a choice. If you don't get hired, your choice is made for you.
