The Colgan Pilots have a unique opportunity to decide what our future could hold for us in the upcoming vote concerning union representation. This is a very important one and should not be taken lightly. The choice whether we vote in ALPA or stay unrepresented will impact Colgan Pilots for years down the road.

A few things, first many have stated, “I won’t be here long enough to see the rewards of a contract.” Be careful with that mentality. Look what the FAA is doing concerning the age 65 rule. It WILL be changed within a year. Once it is changed it will effect hiring at legacy/major carriers, increasing our time at Colgan. With that increased time that will be spent at Colgan, we need a defined set of rules to dictate our quality of life. We have allowed the company to implement rules on a whim to fit their needs. What about the needs and wants of Pilots? The “Policy and Procedure Manual” is a poorly written guideline. Regardless, the company will create ‘rules’ WHEN IT IS BENEFICIAL TO THE COMPANY AT THE GIVEN TIME. ALPA can give us bargaining power to have a collective voice in OUR work rules.

This is nothing personal against the Colgan family. It is for us as pilots to make sure we have an opportunity to make an informed decision. ALPA representation won’t be the end to all of our problems, but it will help us go forward with our expansion in the right direction.

Many Colgan Pilots are wondering what exactly ALPA can do for us. It is time we start looking at specific issues that we would be able to negotiate in a collective bargaining voice. Below are some specific issues that ALPA at Colgan will work to negotiate. These aren’t promises; these are specific issues that have been negotiated at other carriers. It would be up to us at Colgan to decide what we want and negotiate for.

Here are some items ALPA at Colgan would work to negotiate in a contract with scheduling/dispatch articles.

-Commuters policy. If you live in base; awesome. But honestly ask your self if Pinnacle will want to keep 30+ bases open all over the country. Does it make economic sense in the long run? Take a look at the last three bases to be opened announced, IAH, PIT, and EWR. When you find yourself commuting to LGA or EWR wouldn’t you want to be protected?

-Programs to counter fatigue with the Pilots. Let’s face it guys, we get our A$$ worked off, for long days, in hot planes with minimal air conditioning, and little sympathy when they extend you to work six days in a row.

-Fourteen hour duty day for Pilots.

-Two hour call out for reserve

-Cut down on unnecessary Dead Heads, Limos, and Repos. Having a crew drive from LGA to ALB in a blizzard because no hotels were available in LGA at 8:00 PM. When the crew called at 10:00AM to tell them that they weren’t going anywhere, scheduling refused to book them a hotel. This needs to be changed.

-The line you bid is the line you get. No putting in extra days of open time that needs to be covered in the line you bid. Ability for us to tweak our own schedules with computerized bidding.

-Easier way to trip trade. It is ridiculous we have to fax in our bids and trip trades. It should be computerized.

-Cut down on Part 91 reposition flights. There is no need to ferry a flight Part 91 after a 15 hour 121 duty day. Make dispatch, mx control plan better.

-Increased vacation time.

-If you pick up flying on your day off, you get two more days off in return for you to use at a later time as well as extra pay.

These are some specific issues, which ALPA at Colgan would work to negotiate in terms of scheduling/dispatch. Post more if you have them!

Some great points. Alot of people think they will go to some commuter for a couple years and get out. Well what happens if things slow down and your stuck with a job at Colgan for longer than you thought. Could you stand 5 plus years of status quo? No thanks!!!

That would be great if we had some work rules. All I want is to show up to work, fly my day, and go home. I bid on a line and I make appointments, I have things to do. It pisses me off to cancel an appointment that took me a year to get because DR in dispatch wants to rob Perter to pay Paul. I am not at their beck and call. Hire more people. Make it attractive to work here. Retain your people. Real airlines have reserve crews. Mesaba has the same amount of planes and twice the pilots. Colgan pilots need to band together. Let your voice be heard. Colgan pilots need a Union. We need ALPA.

I think Colgan just sucks #### and we need ALPA to protect us. I am sick and tired of flying busted up airplanes, little rest, and being told "weeez changes your schedule" from people without a GED. **** this place.

The Colgans are losing more and more control of the airline to Pinnacle holdings. Honestly ask yourself how much longer it will be family run or when will we be calling MEM to speak to the Chief Pilot.

That's all well and good but according to TB, we are expected to pay out of pocket and then send in a reimbursal request for any and all expenses that occur in the normal course of operations. These expenses include, but are not limited to, taxis, hotel, tolls, rental cars, etc. No BS here. He told me this after I filed a trip report about the taxis in HYA. Taxi company that takes vouchers does not operate early enough for the early show times and the taxi company that does operate early does not want any part of Colgan's vouchers. Got stiffed too often is what the driver told me. Anyway, after I was nearly arrested for refusing to pay when arrangements had been made for them to take a voucher, TB busted out the above gem.

Pay out of pocket? WTF do we work for. I am surprised that we just don't pay to fly the airplanes as well. What a joke!

But Mikey said you would be impressed with your work rules if you just looked at them!!!!! Come on Mikey, do you mean work rules or FARs????????:uzi:

pay out of pocket? your kidding right? If any airline pilot does/starts doing this, they should also rethink where they work, and what they are doing.

Got that right. Enough is enough. Just another reason for a Union. Work rules!

If anyone thinks what happens to Colgan pilots doesn't matter once to them once they get a job, they are wrong. Every contract effects every other contract in some way. So eventually, what happens at Colgan effects Southwest, Delta, UPS, FedEx, etc.

Act like a professional and think long term.

Amen brother!

All the regional guys that were poised to get hired at their dream job on September 10, 2001 had a rude awakening the next morning.

Things can change overnight and we need to make this place the best that we can while we are here.

VOTE YES FOR ALPA!!!!

Just remember what our brothers and sisters at Pinnacle are going thru, have been thru and will go thru....If they didn't have ALPA, they would be SOL right now. The same can happen to the Colgan Pilots if you don't have ALPA going to bat for ya. Look at the changes coming now....Q400 below industry pay scales, the new LodgeX fiasco about to happen...and the latest ploy by Uncle Mike and Phil with their sob story to the NMB....what BS

It's not just work rules, pay and a contract....It's about protection and a voice of one for many...plain and simple.

Finally will someone from the OC go to HEF and talk to the new hire Ground Schools and set the record straight!!! Those poor guys are being brain washed the very first morning they walk in the Training Center...and there is no one there to answer on behalf of ALPA. just a suggestion...

care to elaborate on the sob story?

check your email from alpa fastread or got www.alpa.org/colgan there is a link that says "letter to the NMB" click and read

Company now accusing ALPA of having new hires sign authorization cards...just read it.

Also take note of the "cc"s at the end, including a CC to the "illustrious" Joe Manson. Mr. Manson has served as Pinnacle's union-buster-for-hire for a number of years. He built his excellent union-busting reputation while working for the one and only Frank Lorenzo. Seeing that he is now working for Colgan management in an attempt to bust the union is just further proof that the lines between Pinnacle management and Colgan management are becoming more and more blurry every day. That little family owned airline doesn't exist anymore.

Colgan management has obtained their representation in Mr. Manson. Time for the Colgan pilots to get their own representation.
