Any CAL guys out there that can give me some info on the Houston base. Specifically, how long would it take to get the 73 or 75. What about holding a line? Quality of schedules? How's the commute for West Coast guys? I am considering CAL, but a little worried about QOL as a commuter. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.

Pot calling the kettle black?

How are the scabs in the houston to fly with?

In "the" houston? WTF are you talking about? This is a Major's forum - please go back to the regional forum where a Gojet clown belongs.

BTW, how is military pilot training coming? Got your top fighter yet?

It took me three months to hold a line in "the" Houston. QOL with PBS is hit or miss, mostly miss.

I only commuted for a short period but our commuter policy isn't very good. It sucks. I commuted our of an all RJ, all the time and always full airport. If you are coming from the west coast with big airplanes it may be easier.

Why was the airline Go Jets founded?

Reagarding Houston, there are many who commute from LAX. The 757 has two jumpseats. There are also rumors about a LAX or West Coast satellite base. It seems like more of the senior guys believe it might actually happen. This could be years away however and it is the airline industry so don't be surprised if this rumor is still around 5 years from now!

We have also started contract talks so we might get a better commuting policy and quality of life issues should improve?

In the end, if you are truly a West Coast guy I would go for a company that flies out West, SWA, UAL, DAL all have bases out there. (California that is)

good luck with your career

FWIW, ExpressJet new hires are being based at LAX and ONT. First year pay is the same as CAL and healthcare is covered the first 6 months.

Um, first year pay at CAL sucks but it is greater than Express. 2nd year pay is double than of Express and so-on and so-on.....

First year pay at Express 23 dollars, pretty good pay for a regional airline. First year at CAL is 30.57 pretty bad pay for a major airline, but not equal to Express.

Also no health insurance at Express for the first 3 months.

Scrap--how do you like CAL?
Would you still entertain the thought of wearing purple or brown?

Taxi - yes and yes.

Yes - I do like CAL. Good folks, lots of young people coming on - both pilots and FA's. I've had nothing but good experiences so far...and would happy to stay there for a while.

Yes - I certainly would entertain both purple and brown. They were (and still are) my top choices when I left my contracting job in the squadron and put my app's out.

pkober,

Not trying to start a fight, just wondering what the deal is with your avatar? I imagine terrorists are against peace, judging by their actions. Again, not trying to be a jerk it just struck me as ironic.

Peace, :)

They won't hire him there.

Oh, you're talking about purple panties, yeah he'll wear those.

According to his bio he is a FO at Go Jets, soon to be a captain. So yeah he could be 8 years old.

So why did Trans States holding Co. form this airline, just curious?

Jonny, don't even respond to that instructor****************************** craptard. He's an idiot.

I took it to mean that those who "flaunt" the peace symbol have historically been those who are afraid to truly fight a war to destroy the enemy.

Some who flaunt the peace symbol have fought with great valor in wars. I have no problem with them.

I do have a problem with those who flaunt the peace symbol because they are afraid and are unwilling to admit that we are fighting in a war for our survival. The ones who ran to Canada during Vietnam. The ones who go to Baghdad before the war just to hurt our cause. The ones who bash our country before ever saying anything bad about the terrorists.

If this will turn into a big political debate we need to move it to a different part of this board.

Peace, out.

Exactly what I did not want either. Thanks for the reply, and not jumping my sheet for asking a legit, though off-topic question. Sorry for the thread creep, now about that IAH base....

Back to the IAH base... How quickly are new hires getting IAH? What ariplane are they getting hired into? Does anyone know the latest projections on hireing this and next year?

Aspiring CAL pilot....

Not a problem.

I think some guys are getting IAH in training. If you get IAH in training 99% of the time it will be the 737. If you want IAH and have to go to EWR bid the 737, it will be easier and quicker to get IAH.

Last I heard, June timeframe, was that we were hiring 500 between July and March.

Good Luck.

It all depends on their needs at the time.

Some classes have availability in IAH right away. Some are all EWR. Every now and then there will be a CLE or a GUM slot available too. Sometimes they are all 737. Sometimes there is some 756 and 777 slots thrown in too.

Unfortunately, the vacancies are not completely filled by existing seniority list pilots first with remaining vacancies going to new-hires. In other words, a guy can be at CAL for 6 months, staffed on the 737 but holding EWR 756 and a new-hire can initiate training in the 756 and be based in EWR before the more senior guy can only to bump the junior guy down a number when the more senior guy finally is trained.

I have heard hiring numbers ranging from 400-750 by March of 2008.

For '08 and '09 respectively, retirements are slated to be 199 and 204 (based on 60 yoa) so the 400 # would cover retirements and then growth has been stated at anywhere from 5-8% per year. Plus the fact that we are understaffed as well by an unknown number (I've heard as great as 1000 pilots!)

As far as the comment made about strikebreakers and IAH. That person obviously has no idea what they are talking about.

The commuting is possible and not so bad. I commute DEN--gotta be the biggest fight for a jumpseat in the system and it's been over a year and a half averaging 3-4 hotel rooms a month ($45 out the door). I am not covered by the commuter policy because DEN's flights are nearly always booked plus standby guys senior to me. But, using F9 and UAL, never missed a show. IAH is generally commutable. Not Newark-early shows, late ending. I'm on the 737.
