I don't know why, but those 747SPs are sexy looking airplanes... I remember seeing a Syrian Air 747SP recently at LHR and I did a double take - pretty cool looking.

How long would those LAS-Macau flights be in both directions on the 747SP? Any guesses (average winds)?

GC distance is around 6,400 miles plus what ever you use for an alternate. Using Boeing winds it could take anywhere from 14:30 to 15:30 depending on the time of the year. This assumes a .85 cruise. Yes it will make it 90% of the time non stop. The cost of operation has to be out of sight in todays economics. These pax must be big loosers to keep that operation afloat. Of course when you buy the airplanes for less than 15M, the economics have a way of working out on paper at least.

Both Iran Air and Syrian still operate the SP and one has to wonder how they keep them flying with all the embargos on their airline operations. Suprised they have not gone over to the French side of the house!

The Whale is for Sheldon, not the players. At last stock check, he was worth about 23 Billion with a B. He doesn't much care how much it costs.

Yep, money don't matter to that dude

Would have to respectively disagree. These guys did not get rich by being fools with their money. I have worked for several individuals that are equals to this fellow and while they are not penny pinchers, they are not fools. If they don't watch the money themselves they have hired an army of accountants to watch it for them.

When it comes to airplanes, Sheldon is a spendthrift. Otherwise, I would agree with you.

The acquisition cost of say a L1011-500 is probably less than 15M at the most. The Boeing 747SP may have even been less. Both the B767-300 and the BBJ would have cost many millions more than either of these two airplanes. Depending on how you finish the interiors on the SP and TriStars you could easily be in them for less than 30M each, maybe even less. So this looks to be a pretty good business plan where you create a tremendous over the top impression for the customer while minimizing the bottom line numbers regarding the prior to service costs. Obviously the hourly operational costs are over the top but considering there is no real alternative, what's a poor guy to do when he wants to bring his heavy hitters to the tables?

Basically, Sheldon is playing "mine is bigger than yours" with Steve, Kirk, and G-Money. Right now, he is way out in front.

Fortune had Sheldon's worth at 8 billion in the fortune 500 for this year. His 747 sp is on ramp and he has 2 L 1011's one is for parts. His pay scales are very good for Las Vegas. The turn over is very high for both flight attendant and pilots. You do the math, its Vegas

Don't think the 2nd L1011 is a parts bird as it's undergoing a D+ check at time. Even spendthrifts don't waste money on things like that.
