Haha at first i didn't really look at the plane to see it was AA. I thought it was a Honduran airline or something. Man that is impressive lol. That is amazing that they can get that thing out of there.

I figured some drop zone had finally gotten enough money for a 757...

What's the big deal at Charlie West?

Back in 1999 I was standing on the ramp in Teguce waiting for my pax to show up when an American B757 showed up landing from the opposite end of the runway. The terrain on the the other end of the runway will cause a powerful down draft when the wind hits it just right. The B757 got sucked down and touched down about a 1000' short of the runway, bounced back up, plowed thru the fence and dropped back on the runway where the crew got it under control and came to a stop on the runway.

The fence had ripped 100' long holes in the fuselage. It took a couple of weeks for AA mechanics to patch the holes enough so that the airplane could be ferried unpressurized back to DFW.

This is the airport that made me quit 135 charter.

NTSB Identification: DCA99WA062
Scheduled 14 CFR Part 121: Air Carrier operation of AMERICAN AIRLINES
Incident occurred Wednesday, June 09, 1999 in TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras
Aircraft: Boeing 757, registration: N697AN
Injuries: 94 Uninjured.
This is preliminary information, subject to change, and may contain errors. Any errors in this report will be corrected when the final report has been completed.
On July 9, 1999, an American Airlines 757 struck the airport boundary fence at Tegucigalpa, Honduras while landing on runway 19. There were no injuries and minor damage to the airplane.

Looks like he landed short of the runway on the threshold.

It looks like that's what you need to do to be able to stop. Please if you ever fly down there, or Guatemala city do me a favor and stay on the glideslope all the way down the runway. Then call me and let me know if you stopped before the end of the runway.

It was kind of a joke. Charlie West is one of those places that makes landing interesting. Definitely not anything close to that place, though.

If you are talking about VOR/DME 19 at Guatemala City then yeah been there - done that AND on GS. Not a problem.

Heyas,

Agreed. Charlie-west isn't one of those places where you'd want to under or over shoot.

For those who've never been there, CRW is built on the top of two mountains. They sheared the top off the hills and used the rock to fill in a bit between them. All the runways and taxiways have a shear drop off. If you landed short, you'd go splat into the side of the mountain, and if you went long, you'd do a balisitic arc into the ground WAAAYY below.

Very weird place to land at night. And the only airport I'd ever been to that had curbs on all the taxiways.

I wouldn't quite call them mountains

Holy crap!

That is among the best cockpit videos I've ever seen. You've got to have some brass cajones to fly an approach like that.

I like how the touchdown was so hard, the j/ser almost dropped the camera, lol.

pretty sweet huh? if any of you ever get e chance to fly into Guatemala city do it (as a passanger) it kind funny to see pax reactions to full reverse end full breaks

Been into GUA (MGGT) twice this week and saw no need to slip in under the glideslope. Just don't float (1.4 percent downslope after the touchdown zone) and you'll be fine. Medium autobrakes had us clearing at midfield.

The departure off of 19 has some pucker-factor, though...yank the gear up and watch the earth end underneath you! The active volcano (complete with lava) is a nice touch to remind you you're not in Ohio...

HAHAHAA! I know what you mean, the last i flew in there on American (as a pax) the pilot really got on the breaks! I literally had to keep my self from going forward, it was in the B757. It was fun. Good thing that volcano didnt "burp" while you were taking off. LOL
