I was wondering about what it's like to be based in guam. Housing, social life, safety... Has anyone here been there/done that? Did you like it? How was it for your spouse? I am curious. I did a search and couldn't find much. If there is a previous post on the topic....

People love it, or, hate it.
As a new hire, you won't be able to hold it. Guam is more senior than B777EWR, so if that's your concern, don't worry, you won't get it.

Do worry about PBS. It sucks, and it's screwing most of us in a really bad manner. It's called "denied due to overall solution constrains".................

it's my boyfriend, not me... I was just wondering what the QOL was in guam and why people like it or not. who knows anyway what will open... didn't some fo's get guam 2 months ago in a new hire class?

Man, PBS. 42% on the 737 in EWR and I hit denial mode 4 and could not hold all the weekends off for June. Either I can't bid, or PBS is no good.

Home every night or day. Can fly up to 120, average 85 to 95. Some day flying some night. Junior folks mostly fly night ROR or TKK/PNI. Line holders get mid body pay, Reserve gets blended rate. We hang out at the beach every Friday night for sunset drinks and watch the kids play in the ocean. A lot of BBQ's and get togethers with CAL folks. Home schooling mostly for kids, the schools suck out here. Medical is, well lets say anything serious you will want to go to HNL, MNL, or IAH. It's hot, humid and nice to leave every so often, but then it's nice to come back after you've been away. Don't try to analyse the politics out here you'll go nuts. It's very transient with the military and even with the CAL group. If you come look at it as a long vacation. Best diving in the world out in these parts, travel is good, and the crews are some of the best I've flown with. Golf is cheap, groceries are outrageous, gas is 3.31 a gal, but you don't drive as far or as much. Kite boarding is pretty good, fishing is great, and the fresh fish is good and it's cheap.

Hope this helped

Thanks, it does help. He was just talking about Guam , not seriously but i was just curious. We are just dating, no kids, very active with running, biking and stuff.

talespin summed it up. If you are active outdoors there's lots of things to do. There's plenty of waterfalls and old WWII stuff to explore if you're willing to get out. I've seen too many people come here, crank the AC, never leave the apartment, and l say "guam sucks". Other people come here, learn to dive, learn to sail, hike, fish, mountain bike, etc. Also you're just a hop skip and a jump from places like Bali, Palau, Australia, and Japan.

From the 6 or so hours I spent there going to/from Desert Storm back in '92, it looked like a nice place to visit. The Captain called ahead to have us restricted from the base pub, but us crafty sailors just ponied up to the chilled beer aisle at the base exchange and proceeded to cause a 'major re-stocking event!' Boy, were there were some hurtin' sailors the next morning and a mess in the berthing areas that night!!

Dont forget all of the Japanese tourists that come from like 8 cities in big groups....many many tacky shops, stores and restaurants and typhoon likes to hose the island down quite badly about once a year. Some years are worse than other.
