Some people in here have said that Delta Air Lines is already down to 4 types of A/C (777, 767/757, 737, & the MD88's). This seems logical. But Airline Pilot Central indicates that Delta is "simplifying" their fleet down to 4 A/C types by 2008. To me, this suggests that 1 of their current types is on the way out. Maybe 2 if they announce some 787 orders. So what is the real story here? Could someone in the know shed some light on this for me? Maybe the 767-400 ER is a different type than the other 767/757... I don't know. Just trying to get a handle on what Delta's plans are. Thanks.

You're reading waaaaaaaay to much into the fleet simplification. But to answer, if Delta orders 787's, eventually (not anytime this decade or most of next) the 767's will go away.

Bottom line all that fleet simplification junk was to show the investors what a great job they can do cutting costs. In the last 7 years they've retired 6 fleet types (737-200, 737-300, 737-300G, 727, L1011, MD11)

Not buying a new type that is more fuel effecient for the mission at hand for the sake of fleet simplification doesn't make good business sense.

Delta is not going to get rid of any mainline airplanes for a long time baring another major event like 9/11. Delta mainline will also be buying a bunch a airplanes in the not too distant future. Both these things are a good thing.

Air:
There are currently 5 types of airframes on the property
777
765 (also known as the 767-400)
757/767
73NG (737-800)
MD88

There won't be any more fleet simplification.
I know some time ago DL was interested in combining the 764/777 fleets, but I don't think that went over too well with the faa!

The most junior pilot in SCL flying M88/M90 is in Yr 8.......
Yr 8 f/o = MD88= $88.23/hr
MD90= $90.65/hr

Thanks, so looking at this it would seem a guy would need to be hired 1999 or ealier to hold SLC or is it just a coincidence that the most junior is two years before Delta quit hiring? Just curious.

Actually no. If you were hired before April in 2000, you are presently in year 8.
There is lots of upward movement right now. My guess, the way things are going, and with the new a/c order to be announced, it shouldn't take a new hire long to get to slc.
Hope that helps.

OK, that makes sense. Yeah, I figured there was the natural post 911 break with furloughes and no hiring. Sounds like good things to come. Heard a rumour that the returning furloughies were just told the E195 is more or less a done deal. This occurred in the past couple days in class. Any word on that?

That would be news to me, but they would know more being in ATL. That's where all the good gossip comes from. I only get there during recurrent, which is still a couple of months off. I'm sure all the news will be forthcoming with BK exit.

A friend of mine on VA ave told me the same thing. Although I have heard other rumors from my Delta friends that they are also looking at other 100 seaters, including Airbus models. (really)
