NWA is calling everyone that has accepted recalls and have class dates into late May, offering any class in April (5th, 12th, 19th, & 26th) or earlier May classes. They are trying to quickly increase staffing. Sounds like they will be offering short notice PNR's.

Why

I heard they are trying to get through the entire furlough list ASAP. Not really sure why, but being the highly suspicious person I am, I can't help but think their motive is evil. Probably has something to do with timing of getting out of bankruptcy and/or selling off the airline. Lord knows they have been running very understaffed for a long time. I doubt it has anything to do with easing the understaffing problem or fixing pilot quality of life!

What is going on here is GROSS MISMANAGEMENT!!!!!!

I've been at NATCO for the last two weeks and the word from instructors is that they do not have enough IPs. Trng can schedule IPs to do OE or trng in the sim, but not both. If they(IPs) do sim work, they have to cancel flights. If they do OE, they have to cancel training. Pretty FU!!!

Scheduling told one of the guys in class that there are not enough pilots to fly the schedule that marketing has sold for the summer. Lots of cancelations this summer. How can you run a business like that?

The sad part is that not a single head will roll. Their compensation package will be disclosed soon and it's going to be disgusting. Summer at NWA this year is going to be a treat.........

God help us all!!!!!!!

Heyas,

Word is that they at %10-15 short for the summer.

The rumor that is floating around is that the company was going to try to force the union to grieve the computer bidding issue (ALPA informed the company that they are exercising their right to terminate PBS), so they figured they were safe from the effects for at least the short term.

Turns out the union may actually be on fairly solid legal ground, at now all that productivity that PBS provides the company just went phffft.

Buds tell me they're so far in the hole they can't even see daylight. Some figure they are 400-500 pilots short.

Nu

There is also a significant number of pilots who will be making more money in retirement than they will be on the line. One of them would be making $15,000 more a year if he retires in a year.

What date of hire are the recalls down to now?? Have they made it through the list once already?

May of '01. There are approx 120 that have not been offered recall yet. Many who have gotten offers have deferred. More letters to come out soon, though it's hard to say how many will go towards the bottom of the list -vs- people who had previously deferred.

NWA left a message on my answering machine at home offering me the recall today. I'm in Taipei on a trip with my new employer so I didn't get to listen to it, but my wife said the person said to "call NWA back in the next 8 hours." WTF? Is that all the time they're giving guys to accept or bypass? I guess they are getting desperate.

And no, I didn't pull out my AT&T international calling card to call them back.

Hired June of '01, furloughed Dec '01.

I thought NWA was parking 59 more airplanes. How can they park airplanes and still be short of pilots? If anything, it sounds more like they should stop recalls to avoid furloughing those who've just come back on the property.

You're getting warmer....

If you're interested in the actual Fleet Plan, you should check out the Disclosure Statement and the P.O.R.. The information put out at NATCO and at base visits by Rainey was intended for eliciting concern by pilots. Period.

Occam, are you tired of the NWA webboard?

Mark,

You disappeared a few months back and I was wondering where one could find your dry wit!

Agree with your assessement of Rainey's visit!

Cheers

Gee what happened to your letter of resignation when you got hired at the new carrier? Wonder if KD would like to hear about that! haha Come visit in SFS! LOA(your just trying to get more money out of that ALPA buy back aren't you!?

I guess my letter ended up in the same pile as yours, bro. And damn right I'll take as much of that claim sale as I can. See you in SFS.

OR,

There was no fleet plan in the POR unless they provided it in an updated one.

Not so sure if the TR/TC presentation was deliberate like you infer, or they just don't know themselves. Like the Mil, I think the sine wave of staffing and planning never sync. Hopefully this time it's in our favor. I think we will have a lot more clarity post BK.

Unless thay are planning on drawing down a boatload of flying thier staffing plan does not pass the scratch and sniff.....word is they are being closed mouth now because they are PO'ed thier supposed "confidential" briefings to non-cleared employees in an open setting ended up on Council web pages and then the Star and Sickle....duh.

Struck me more as a deliberate leak - to what end? Get the pilots spun up for a diversionary move? For what?

The POR referenced the settlements and obligations NWA has to the leasing companies and the value of assets they intend to retain. That was reverse-engineered to determine how much $$ would go to leasing companies.

The Tim's were only specific about the parking schedule for the DC-9's. That's because those are the only a/c that are reaching the end of their cycle life and have been previously idendified as having a firm "Park date".

30 DC-9's gone over the next two years sounds about right when compared to the schedule they gave us back in '99. (We use the '99 plan as a baseline because that's when we started using the ratio formula we negotiated in '98 regarding RJ's and maninline narrowbody aircraft.)

As for the other a/c the Tim's mentioned, they can always point out that they never gave a timeline for parking the other a/c! That's like telling a 4-year old, "You're gonna die!" It's 100% correct, but without a timeline, just a head-game.

Call the Crew Planning folks and ask them what the forecast looks like. They'll tell you exactly what they're being told, which is, "Get those furloughed guys back here!" And please don't yell at them. They are a rare group of worker bee's who deal with pilots every day and still manage to like us! (Maybe it's because they work with managment too!)
