What are some ideas or experience anyone has had with changing jobs and needed health insurance for a family of 3 for a few weeks until the new insurance kicks in? Besides COBRA, of course.

Thanks.

Don't Use Cobra!!!!

Don't use cobra if you can help it. It is about 10 times more expensive than short-tern insurance/gap insurance. Unless there is a serious pre-existing thing or unless your spouse plans to become pregnant during the timeframe you are without insurance, don't use it. I went to ehealthinsurance.com.... Most do, and I am satisfied with the price and choices. Just to give you an idea. Cobra for me, spouse and daughter was approx 763.00 a month. YES, EVERY MONTH... I went to ehealthinsurance.com and was again very satisfied with their choices. Make sure you click the button for short-term insurance. you can arrange it by price, coverage, deductible, etc... Choices vary, and you will get bluecross blueshield, humana, united healthcare, etc. For the most part, all good companies and they are rated as well... I went with Unicare and paid upfront 563.0, and that is for the whole 6 month term, not monthly... Take a peek, but after extensive research, this is where I ended up. Hopefully I can save you the time and hassel I went thru. Make sure you select short-term if it's for 6 months.. (CAL possibly?)

Read your COBRA letter carefully, you may have 45 days to decide, which means that if you have no claims, you pay nothing, but if you end up in the emergency room, you can elect Cobra. It works very well (and I think was designed) as a bridge like you're talking about.
