I suppose I should have read a little closer - thought this just happened recently. Are hogs there now? I was over ther a few months back and never did doing A/R with them...It took place on March 28, 2003 in Iraq, and there are A-10s in Iraq.
I've seen the HUD video and I feel terrible for everyone involved, especially since someone decided the public needs to punish these pilots. I think this should be left to the U.S. military and the Brits family. That's it.
Sadly, it was A-10s doing the frat this time. I had always held them in a higher category of CAS than F-16s. The porker guys in Afghan that bombed the Canadians were about the most F-d up two-ship I've ever seen. That was a total disgrace. This was more stupidity than boldface arrogance. Either way, they sucked, did it wrong and should have their pee pees slapped accordingly.
Orange missiles? YGTBSM.

What does one have to do with the other? First of all, they're both USAF friendly fire on allied troops. Secondly, they're both great examples of AFRC/ANG clowns making poor decisions. How's that for ya? Since you're an ANG F-16 guy, I understand where your angst comes from. However, if you can somehow watch the Afghan HUD tape of the IL ANG guys and say that they didn't screw the pooch at least a half dozen times, you've had more coolaid and weed than most people.
This was an O-5 on the wing of an O-4 who wasn't smart enough to tell his Lt. Col. command post boss that those "Iraqi trucks with orange missiles" might not be a legit target. Can you tell me that you wouldn't think for a moment that "orange missiles" might be the sign that it was friendlies with ORANGE PANELS on their vehicles? C'mon, your blind faith is almost admirable, but either way you look at it, they F-d up.
Common sense says that after all the frat that's happened in Iraq I/II, Bosnia, Kosovo and Afghanistan, the word "ORANGE" would make the hair on lead's neck stand up and he'd take his time to find out if those were friendlies with orange panels rather than worrying about strafing them before they were bingo.
Next time you get deployed to OEF or whatever and you see this color....maybe you'll think about it.
They took them away a little bit after the start of OIF, and now brought them back recently due to targeting pods that can reduce CDE.I didnt think there were A-10s in Iraq...
I'm not a fan of releasing HUD tapes, but it appears the family of these fallen warriors was not told the true circumstances of their deaths.
I think the family has a right to know if they were killed in a non-combat accident, by enemy fire...or by friendlies.
Two tragedies.
