Only if you think 747 Captain on the worlds #1 ranked carrier is a dead end.

Seriously, what are you holding out for, that NASA Shuttle Pilot slot?

SO's at Cathay get a seniority number just like anybody else and eventually upgrade to Junior FO, FO, and Captain.

Well i'm sure it's one hell of a long shot. I do meet their requirements. They just want 1k hrs and an ATP written ect. I'm at 1800hrs. I figured I'd just place an application and see what happens. I didn't know if it was one of those "promise" programs like gulfstream you see out there where you were hired but never really planned on being moved up the ladder.

Put in your application. You are correct that you are not likely to get called with your times but you never know. I think competitive is over 3K hours right now, with some turbine time.

I got the call for an SO interview just a few weeks ago. (interview at the end of March). I currently have about 3900 hours and 1300 turbine, with most of that PIC.

If you are truly interested you should browse over at pprune.org in the "Fragrant Harbour" section. The SO job at Cathay is nothing like Gulfstream. It is a very selective interview. If you get hired at Cathay it should be the last stop on your career ladder, although you should be prepared to move to Hong Kong.

Take it for what its worth. Two friends of mine who were hired as DEFO's said that the competive mins for SO were WAY higher than what you have, as well as the published mins. More like 3-4000 with ALOT of turbine SIC.

Good luck applying. If they call you, great, you scored. You win and can rub it in all our faces.

However, if you do get hired, don't bring your backpack on the overnight. Breakdown and buy an ACTUAL roller bag. You won't look like such a doosh.

I said it was a long shot but doesn't hurt to place. More or less wondering about the program. And stop with the backpack bit you don't know what you're talking about. If you read anything prior to posting you'd see that.

PS Nice spelling. 2yr tech degree for the win?

You are right, I don't know what I'm talking about with the backpack. After all, I was an "idiot" as you say for buying a PNS bag. I should be smart like you and buy a backpack for the overnights.

Where are you coming up with this backpack bit? I said I use one when I travel to carry random things and I have several bags. Yes paying $300 for a roller bag is dumb when you only make $20k to start with.

Yes but I can attest that the PNS bag will last you for a long time, and you don't have to worry about it falling apart at the most inopportune time, like pulling it through Mexico City on your way to the hotel :angryfire. As far as SO at Cathay. I have been here for a little over three months now. This month I worked 13 days. Next month I work 13 days. Most of my trips start on the night of the first day and are back on the morning of the fourth day. I make 30% more than I did as a captain in the US at a great regional. We are planning to increase our fleet by 43% in the next three years. If you come in and do your job, keep your head low, and stay away from the politics, I think it can be a very rewarding job. Plan on living in HKG for a while. Definitely not a bad thing at all. Put in your application. Do some research. I definitely think your post is a little ignorant if you are comparing us to Gulfstream. Good luck.

Is it possible to commute from LAX to HKG for the SO position? I know its a long commute, but does the company have any restrictions? If not how soon would you be able to get a U.S. base, specifically LAX? Thanks in advance.

I didn't compare you to anything. I ASKED if it was like that. I have no idea that's why I'm here asking. There are many places that look good on the surface then you find out something completely different. That's why I came here in hopes of finding out from someone that worked there. So thanks for th info. When I get my time I shoot an application over. 2000hrs where most of it is flight instruction doesn't seem to do the job just yet.

However how are you on the internet on american sites being in Honkong? I thought China limited all that stuff. I know they try not to change HK but just wondering.

Don't tell anyone, but there is a secret internet cafe in the basement right next to "Strawberries". All americans go there to get on american sites. I even heard of guy that managed to get on "playboy. com"...

Gents,

you can do far worse (and perhaps in a couple of places better) than a career at CX.

if you want to get a sense of where Cathay are going in the next ten years..go to www.flightglobal.com and read the interview from the head honco...

good luck

As far as ANC being junior, it is but you must have competitive minimums for the freighter. Most people being hired on the freighter have a minimum of 4000 hours and 1000 turbine pic or better. If you are interested, fill out the online application and shoot it over. Huge growth going on for the next few years, we need a lot of pilots in a short period of time. Good luck.

Wish I could downgrade to SO. 3 years off with pay!

We are planning to increase our fleet by 43% in the next three years.

I heard that most of the orders they have are going to replace the under-performing A343 and A346.... so there's not going to be THAT much growth. Is that true?
Thanks

Box,
Will a really junior SO be awarded long stretches of days off, say 6 or 7+ in a row? Just wondering how I am going to make it back to LA each month to stay current in the guard. Thanks.

Deing a DESO would be tough commuting back and forth.....your best bet would be DEFO LAX based.

As far as long stretches of days off go. Most months you will have a group of at least 5-6 days off in a row, and sometimes as many as 10. The problem with SO is you do a sim every 2 months. Many times they will stick it right in the middle of your days off. Could make it difficult to make it back every month for the guard. Every other month is definitely doable though. As for the 340 replacement. I think that the -600 will be going away, but I'm not sure about the -300. I would say as more 773er's come on board, the 340 will go away completely. According to our CEO in a recent interview, our fleet will be more than 180 aircraft by 2010. We currently have just over 140 with Dragon Air. That is a fleet growth of nearly 40 AC in three years. The classics are slated to go away by around 2012 I think, and will probably be replaced by -400 freighters. Any way you shake it, we are in a huge growth cycle. If you are interested in CX, probably a good time to join. Good luck.

I'd take DEFO LAX in a heartbeat, but I've had my app in for over 2 years and I just now got the invite to interview for an SO position. My feeling is it's better to get hired on now as an SO in the pax fleet as opposed to waiting 1.5-2 years longer to build turbine PIC time to be competitive for the DEFO on the cargo fleet. Seniority is everything right? If it means sucking it up and commuting back to the guard until I can bid for FO in LAX than I'm prepared to deal with it. Wifey is cool with the idea too. If hiring continues at a good pace I might not have to sit SO for long anyhoo.

Definitely best idea to get on-board as soon as possible. We are a seniority driven airline, even though that's definitely not the only factor. Most people when joining as a SO, stay on the pax fleet due to the money being better in HKG. Should be pretty easy for you to move back to the freight fleet if you like. Study hard for the interview, and make sure they know you want to move to HKG. Good luck.

hdodo,

Depending on the roster you choose, your consecutive days off will vary. You can request "Super-compact Rosters" (this will now depend on seniority since RP07). This will give you "at least" 8 days between long haul trips. I have seen 10-12 on average, but then plan to work 8-9 days. Trip swaps will help even more, and being on the -400 you will see LAX quite often.

If your roster has say 13 days off in a row, and you are due for a sim, it's quite comon they will throw that sim on your 9th day.

As far as comming over to the freighter, you can be assesed (interview) as an F/O once completing your S/O line check. I don't reccomend it but it's possible. If you are found suitable AND there are vacancies availible (usually are in North America) you "cannot" start class for your upgrade until your 1 year line check. If you can get the -400 this will also make it a much easier transition.

Other than that i would plan 2.5 years on the pax fleet to upgrade to JFO.

Do Cathay Pacific employees qualify for ZED fares on any carriers? I have an interview in May and was curious if commuting will be an option. How long until a new hire can hold ORD on the freighter? Thanks to anyone who has any insight on commuting at Cathay Pacific.
