Family is thrown off Air Tran flight after child throws a temper tantrum

A Massachusetts couple was asked to get off a Boston-bound flight before takeoff in Florida because their little girl would not take her seat. The airline says it was following federal regulations but the couple says they were treated unfairly.

Three-year-old Elly Kulesza of Worcester may say she likes flying but that wasn't the case last week when she and her parents boarded an Air Tran flight to return from a Florida vacation.

"When we picked up Elly to put her back in her seat that's when she started to cry."

"It was a strong solid waa, she wasn't really happy."

But Elly's parents were stunned by what airline employees told them next.

"They were talking to my husband, they said 'so you need to get off the plane now' and I looked up and I went are you serious?"

Serious they were, off the plane they went, their luggage and car seat headed to Boston without them.

"And to make matters worse, the Kuleszas were told since they were thrown off the plane they couldn't get on another plane for 24 hours."

Air Tran says: "It regrets the situation but that we have an obligation to the other 112 other passengers on the flight, and had to make an operational decision to ask the kulesza party to deplane so the flight could depart."

"I was outraged and embarrassed, I'm a full time EMT in Boston and if I treated anybody the way they treated me I would be out of a job.

"I just wanted to make the public aware of what happened and this too can happen to them if their child is crying too much."

Air Tran did refund the Kulesza's money and did offer them 3 free round trip business class tickets anywhere they wanted to go but the Kuleszas declined, saying they're never flying Air Tran again.

I know it can be seen both ways, who wants to sit next to a crying kid..but, who is to say the kid would cry on and on...but, life sucks sometimes and it is no way to treat a paying customer. Of course Airtran is a cheap airline to fly on and they get what they offer...just glad I will never work for them or ever buy a ticket on them. But, this is just my opinion.

By leaving a crying kid on the plane, they are treating the other 112 paying passengers like ********************. I guess you think thats ok?

So whats worse, refund the crying kids familys money PLUS give them 3 BUSINESS class tickets, or leave them on and piss off 112 other passengers.

They should be happy, their stupid kid gave them a free trip, and like idiots they declined it.

You forgot to say that the aircraft was delayed 15 minutes already while the parents tried to get control of the kid. They couldn't even get her into her seat for pushback. That's the reason that they were kicked off the plane, not for the kid crying. Maybe next time they'll carry the carseat on and strap her into it instead of checking it.

The parents don't deserve a dime.

There were over a 100 people on that flight, plus hundreds more depending on that airplane to operate on time so as to make their connections and schedules.

Are these 2 selfish parents are so important that these hundreds of people should miss connections and be late for appointments because two adults can't control their devil spawn enough to get a seat belt on it???!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm sorry, three cheers for the crew who kicked them off, and a big raspberry to management for apologizing.

OK OK..I can't argue with your responses. I am sure it was hell to get the kid to calm down and I know I hate crying kids on the plane. But, I still can't stand Air Tran. Airlines have to try and treat all customers the same. I am very sure they have at one times pissed off each and every one of those 112 people on board. I do not think they really care about any of them. If they did they would rasie fares. Higher fares means less people and less hassles. Seemed to work in the 70's. (regulated of course) Airlines treat their passengers as...well passengers and not as customers.

As long as budweiser doesn't make an ad about this, everything will be ok.

Hey flyi pilot I'm glad you don't work for us too. Now enlighten us as to which great airline you work for.

They said they would never fly AT again, that should be a selling point for AT. BTW the kid was interfering with the duties of a crewmember, that is grounds in the FAR's to throw anyone off.

Flyipilot, another DumbA$$ with his mouth open. Read the whole story, the kid wouldnt sit in the seat and they check the car seat which would have restrained the child so the plane could move. A kid crying no big deal but not staying in the seat is a violation and a safty issue.

Flyipilot, I guess you would have no problem going on national T.V. and confessing that your 3 year old got you kicked off a flight because you could'nt control him.

Does the "i" stand for IDIOT?

BTW, I removed a mother and her 3 year old 4 months ago for the same reason. I don't care if your kid screams and throws a fit, But you will sit down and wear your seat belt or you will get off.

I don't know about you, but I sure am happy when I deadhead on Airtran and they upgrade me to business class. Nice folks, and some good former flyi pilots there.

YOU WILL RESPECT MY AUTHORITAY!!!

YOU WILL RESPECT MY AUTHORITAY!!!

Thats right, 100 other people should'nt have their travel interrupted because you can't control a child. I'm 40 and still afraid of my parents wrath.

GOOD thing they didn't let him slide through the cracks.........

Correct decision.....BAD appology AirTran - back up your crews and they will bend over backwards.....

Hate to say it but he kinda makes Indie pilots look bad........

The ones I know would never say anything this retarded !!

flyipilot is a WINDOWLICKER for sure......

Glad I can get a rise out of everyone..makes reading these more fun. Say what you will, I just voiced an opinion as you have yours. If a small child can directly intervene with a crewmembers duties..WOW! I think the gate agents had the door open the whole time. The airplane was not off the gate..so, thus it was not crew interference. I could be wrong but, I am pretty sure that the FAA see it this way as well. I did not say I did not agree with kicking them off the flight. I just said they did it poorly, or I meant to say it. Now they are in all the news and it is not good press. The family has had hundreds of outpours to them and offers from others. Of course jumping on the band wagon of the public sympathy. Being a pilot has nothing to do with the FAR's, that is just simple government regulations everyone follows. The Pilots might not have even been involved, it might have been the FA telling the gate agents to remove them, which they did. I say charge the kid with interference of a crew member...then Air Tran will really look good! I have a lot of great friends at Air Tran and they know how I feel. Now, Skybus...well there is an airline! Perfection!

Did you see the MSNBC poll where only 9 percent of the 115,000+ respondents said they were treated unfairly? 91 percent said the crew was absolutley correct kickin the kid off the plane.

I hear ya.

I don't see how people can say that this is a problem with AirTran clientele, it is everywhere.
