Does anyone know how long it would take a newhire to hold MSP? I figured MSP would be a better place to live than MEM or DTW. Thanks guys.

Snowballs chance in hell!

No really, You can go to training and get a base (DTW probably), but keep your initial bid in for MSP and eventually get it. It may take up to 6 months, meanwhile you are stuck !

A lot of people have been getting there first choice of bases. I was in a May class and got MSP right away and am still on reserve. Reserve in DTW is much shorter (2-3 months).

I was in class in March, got MSP in September, and have sat 1 month of reserve, in September. I have held a line ever since. I wouldn't count on getting Minny too quick though, the lines continue to be reduced for whatever reason...

I was planning on moving. Out of the three bases, which one would be best to live in? I heard Mem was ghetto, but I could not find a lot of stuff on the other two. I have a friend that lives in MSP and he seems to like it.

Bwatz for your money, DTW. Live south (New Boston or further) or west (Ann Arbor or further). You will do well in those areas. I am a fmily guy on a budget and this is what my research uncovered. MEM can be alright too, if you get out of the Memphis area. MSP is expensive.

Minny is probably the best of the 3. Detroit is ok, but you have to live well out of the city to find it enjoyable. Memphis is a dive. I wouldn't wish that on anyone.

Out of the 3, Detroit is the most commutable, but again, I wouldn't wish commuting on anyone. Minny is a very suburban city, you can find lots of reasonable price condos/townhomes within 10-20 minutes of the airport. Also, the downtown area is a good place to live if you want to take the lightrail into the airport.

But like I said, I don't know if you will be able to hold Minneapolis right away. They keep chopping the lines down in here, so the more they chop, the longer it will take. Hopefully they up them soon. Good luck!

Good advice. I live in MSP. It is expensive. Also, your advancement is MUCH MUCH slower here. DTW would be better.

Could be worse guys, I've been at XJ for like, uh, 6 years, and I uh, am bottom of the barrel, straight reserve in MSP...

I was in MEM for 6 months before going to MSP (Mesaba). The eastern suburbs of Memphis are surprisingly nice. I was expecting much worse.

A Class that started 12-18 placed NH First Officers in all three domiciles. The story has been the same for the past couple of classes. FYI two more NH classes in the school house as we speak. One will finish the end of January (18 pilots) and another started last week that will finish mid February but, I don't know how many pilots are in that class. Also, there has been a vacancy about every month for the past 3 months so, there will be an opportunity to base swap if desired.

Now, if you want to sit reserve a long time go to MSP cause that is the base with the fewest amount of block hours. If someone wants to fly a hold a line quickly my suggestion would be DTW. MEM is a crapshoot it has been a senior FO base in the past but, has also been pretty junior. That's just my take on the whole issue. I hope this helps.

I have been based at all 3 for XJ (currently in MEM) and if your a young single guy willing to relocate DTW would be my pick. Lots of stuff to do and the areas south and west of Romulus are not to bad. If you don't mind a bit of a drive Toledo is pretty nice and that way you don't have to live in Michigan (taxes).

Good luck and-try to get out of the redtail family as soon as possible!!

Move here to MSP.

Sure the taxes are high, but at least it's cold!

Don't know where I heard these before, but here are some good reasons to move to MSP:

1. It's as far as you can possibly be from competitive football.
2. In winter you can clean up after your dog with a 9-iron.
3. -15F usually narrows the homeless problem down a bit.
4. In summer, mosquitos the size of rotweillers.
5. Tater tots and cream of mushroom soup is the cheapest Official State Food anywhere.
6. You can lock your car in winter with a bucket of water, and you don't have to worry about the ice cream melting in your trunk if you get stuck in traffic on your drive home from the supermarket.
7. There's no telling who we're gonna elect governor next!
8. You're far enough South to be in a country that owns the Stanley Cup, but far enough North to understand when "icing" is called.
9. Clothing sold in Minnesota is neither taxed...nor fashionable.
10. To celebrate your upgrade to Captain, the Mall of America gives your wife her own reserved parking space.

 How bout a DTW breakdown Occam?

Would MEM be a likely option out of training. Does Pinnacle base reserves there?

I thought you were AirNEt! Yes you could get reserve out of MEM but it may take a few months. You might have to initially go to DTW, but keep your primary bid in for MEM. Plenty of crash pads around. You will probably fly more out of DTW as a reserve.

Just so you guys know...

MEM FO had 32 spots that went unfilled in the latest vacancy so that will go to new hires...DTW also had a bunch...New Hires will be going to DTW and MEM for the future...MSP is a whole different story though...Might have to wait 3 months for MSP...Hope this helps

DTW is a great place to be based because:

1. There are thousands of auto workers who will NEVER give you grief about your industry!
2. "I live in Detroit" will make almost any thug in the world back down from messing with you.
3. "I live in Detroit" will make almost any pilot in the world feel sorry for you.
4. You're an airline pilot, so most of your time would be spent away from there!
5. It's still high season for mocking Yankee's fans.
6. "Fire Matt Millen!" t-shirts are dirt cheap, and considered dressy enough for the nicest DTW night spots. (Plus, everybody's got one)
7. Very little chance of getting caught behind a city-owned snow plow in Detroit, since the city only owns 3 of them!
8. It will make your life longer by causing every day to seem like it's dragging on forever!
9. 911 calls to report crime are much quicker. You simply give them the Piston's players jersey number and the location...
10. Goodbye concerns about flying past age 60! Hello concerns about living past age 60!

Yeah, present and future Airnet. Not necessarily looking to leave, but I was based in MEM for awhile and liked the area alot. If I do go to the airlines getting MEM would be a factor in going Pinnacle or not.

#5 tops my list on that one. Might as well go for the hat trick and get MEM done.

MEM, huh?

Lemme see...

MEM is a great place to be based because:

1. Any triple-digit IQ qualifies you for Memphis Mensa.
2. You don't have to pay airport prices for Corky's.
3. Professional services available to help sort-out guest seating at weddings, where "family of the bride" and "family of the groom" could technically sit on both sides.
4. Professional services available to explain that last one to people from MEM.
5. Home of the edgiest tower controllers in the South: "Is that a retirement water cannon salute, or is FedEx 705-Heavy in early?"
6. All FDX pilots good-natured enough to know a joke when they read one.
7. Some of the best medical care in the country is a short 2-hour flight north, to the Mayo Clinic.
8. No state income tax...and the schools to prove it.
9. State motto: "The Wagon Broke, So We Stayed"
10. Easy to tell captains from F/O's. Captains live in double-wides!
11. The pure delight of mocking the locals in line at the theater for "Shakespeare's Othello" because they think it's about a brand new line of bass fishing reels.
12. It ain't Arkansas!
