Where is the best place to get a 737 type if I am wanting to pay for it myself. I am interested in a good training program, good instructors and a descent sim. Please keep all the negative comments to yourselves. Thanks in advance.

Type Q

FTI out of Denver. I did my type in 93'. Hired by SWA in 94'. I have a few buddies that went there, and we all had a great experience. Good luck.

FTI, K&S, and Higher Power have all been highly regarded by friends. The only one I heard bad reports about was AeroServices in Miami, and that was two bad experiences from two friends.

I used Higher Power and would recommend them without reservation. Really good training.

...

Nice big jet .... I think I'll buy myself a job!!!

When will it end!

I just finished at Higher Power in Nov and start class in January at SWA. If you appreciate customer service, my experience was excellent at Higer Power.

I did mine with Higher Power. If you're trying to get on with SWA they have probably the closest connections with them. A rep from SWA even comes in during your ground school. Everybody there is awesome!

I didn't get hired at SWA but got hired at CAL instead. I don't regret getting my type rating though, the experience I had was great and it's making training a lot easier at CAL.....not $8000 easier, but easier.

There are cheaper places to get them, and SWA will probably call you once you get it (as long as you meet the minimums) regardless of where you go.

Probably when WN pilots are no longer the highest paid in the industry or when WN is no longer the most stable job in the industry.

No soup for you. NEXT!

Higher Power Aviation in Dallas. The best, bar none!!! I am finishing this week and can't say enough good about it to give it justice. First class operation. Two reps from WN came out to see us at HPA.

Chase, thanks for the visit and taking us to lunch.

Boeing in SEA. If you buy the airplane for about $50,000,000 the type is FREE! Then you can sell the production slot to WN at a profit. You'll have them at both ends of the deal. Find yourself any airline CEO and they will show you how to do all of this without ever actually having a dime.

LOL! Exactly which industry are you referring to? A large domestic-only regional-type industry flying the smallest aircraft Boeing makes? :D

WN is basically a large domestic-only regional flying predominantly short-haul, high-frequency. The catch that blurs the line is they fly a bit larger aircraft and are paid substantially more than traditional regional carriers, that pay difference being accentuated post-9/11. Pre-9/11, the pay differential between the legacies and WN was very pronounced in favor of the legacies.

I think it's difficult, if not impossible, to compare WN to any legacy with a worldwide route structure. I know a lot of SWA pilots will try to convince us of the merits of a 9+30 layover at the Cedar Rapids Holiday Inn (after flying 6+ legs) versus the 24- 36hr layovers in Sydney or Paris (after flying 1 leg) more typical of a major.

Since WN pilots' productivity is just about maxed to FAR limits, I and others believe that if there is another industry downturn due to terrorism, another war (Iran, N. Korea, Syria), etc... you will see WN management turn to their pilots for wage concessions to "more closely align their pay with their peers" flying the smallest similar passenger aircraft.

Perhaps I'm wrong?

Yep... XJT would never make its pilots pay for training. Oh, wait... they already did it.

The last airplane instruction that I paid for was a MEI. THats it.

When did we start flying to Ceder Rapids? Cool, another city. Thanks for keeping us informed.

328, you saw right through me with that Cedar Rapids thing! :p

I'm sure the Midland and Lubbock layovers are fascinating.

Personally, I can't imagine flying the same airplane to the same destinations for 30 years (well 35, if you guys are successful at raising the retirement age!) This must be one of those "to each his own" things.

yeah, because going to school for 2-3 months at a time to learn a new airframe is just such a blast. :puke: Aren't they all just metal tubes anyway? If you dig saying "heavy" on the radio & doing twelve hour legs.....I guess that's one of those " to each his own" things too.

Ah... but at the end of the flight is Hong Kong, Singapore, Beijing, Shanghai, Tokyo, Sydney, Honolulu, Paris, London, Cologne, Vienna, Madrid, etc... :)

Let's see... at the end of a typical SWA pilot's day he's at another Holiday Inn in Lubbock, Midland, Birmingham, Oakland, Midway, Ontario, etc... :bawling:

To each his own I guess. :D

so it's obvious you don't care for short haul (i.e. easy) domestic flying. Cool. I got the T-shirt at most of those intl spots you named.......they're all just another layover after you've done it a few times. 2 week trips, crossing time zones, landing in the "'stans", talking to the folks on the HF that "kinda" speak English.........enjoy.

Sounds like a hoot.............flying for 12+hours while shooting your watch, jet-lagged, trying to figure out how to dial the states, missing 2 weeks of your kids life at a time while you enjoy such exotic destinations. Yuk!!!! I am sure for you military types learning a new airplane is fun, but not having to learn anything new for 30 years sounds nice. Boeings smallest plane has been largely unsuccessful right? Every FedEx/UPS pilot gets 20 days off, one round trip to Eurpoe with a 72 hour layover a week right?? lol. Yall dont take the 727 to such exotic destinations as Boise, etc for a fun-filled 2day layover ever? To each his own. You chose Cargo, fine. I bet the second you show-up to a social event within 90seconds of you showing up EVERYONE knows that BBB drives a corvette, has a huge house, wife with bolt-ons, flys a heavy, just got back from Europe, and went to the AirForce Academy (Zoo). correct? Might wanna go write your name on your kids forehead so they remember it.

I've gotta admit the corvette part is correct! :D

Remington, I'm sensing some hostility in your post. Take a deep cleansing breath and let it go. Just my opinion that SWA can't be compared to a global airline with a variety of fleets and international destinations. You dig Lubbock and I prefer London. To each his own.

I like the karaoke at the Holiday Inn in Dayton.

Hey BBB, I will be going to Sydney this month too, during my 19 days off in just my second month on the line.

BBB,
I got all those foreign city T-shirts you mentioned, way before the age of 40. You can have the multiple time zones & jet lag at age 40, 50+++. Sorry you got a late start on seeing the rest of the world. It's much better the the good ole USA!???? I'd take Lubbock, TX over 99.9% of the rest of the world.

I kissed the great American soil everytime I came home!! 4 time zones for me from now on!

Back to the original question about type ratings. I signed up for a type rating with K&S Aviation in PHX. Had to back out more than 45+ days in advance. They wouldn't take back the unopened, still in the box 737 books (value $250). So I was out 250 bucks. Not great customer service if you ask me. Just my .02

Late start? How's that? I started traveling regularly outside the USA at age 25 courtesy of Uncle Sam. I've been to over 70 countries and still enjoy seeing new places/people/things. You can keep your false pity and keep trying to convince yourself Lubbock is an international cultural mecca.

Many people are frightened to travel outside their comfort zone... you are not alone in that fear. :D Please do not attempt to compare Lubbock with say, Vienna. You will lose the last ounce of credibility you might have with some readers.

It sounds like you enjoy the regional lifestyle of 8 legs a day followed by min rest at a Holiday Inn and a country fried steak. Good on you. Happy New Year... may all the holidomes be to your liking! :D

Best place to get a 737 type right now?

AirTran.

Best place to use a 737 type?

SWA, Fedex, UPS, CAL

I'm only half kidding. If our management doesn't wake up pretty soon, there is going to be a mass exodus for the above.
