FEX Written and UPS

My FEX written expired but I still work for a 121 Airline. My application is in at UPS . Will I possibly get a call for a interview with an expired (on paper) FEX written? I can go take it after a call before the interview but would like for it to not expire again.

I am not sure if they will accept it. If you really want to work at UPS...just go take it again and then you don't have to worry about it. I took it 3 times.

I interviewed in 04' w/ a written that expired in 94'.
no comment on it during the interview.

I had an expired FE Written (kept current by operating 121) when I interviewed in Mar 05. Am planning on taking it again very soon.

I just got called for an interview on November 30th, the very day that my FE written expired. Buz Thompson, the UPS recruiter, asked me to take it again before I head to Louisville. I'm taking it again this weekend. Hope this helps.

I put in the date of the test and it just says application is complete. When I update the numbers, it has a red star next to the FEX written. When I reenter the date it goes away. Not sure if the star is kicking my application out....that is the main question. I will retake it if I need to....no doubt.

For the folks who got the interview with the expired FEX written, did you get hired, and if not was it because of the written. Like I said, I will retake it again before any interview. Just was trying to eliminate having to take it and two years later going through it again.

It's actually simple....take it....Capt Megadeth is correct...take it and then you don't have to worry or kick yourself in the a$$ wondering if that's the reason you didn't get the phone interview or didn't get hired.

At FEDEX, the applications in the system are way too competitive to look at an applicant that doesn't have all the required squares filled.

Maybe not the answer you were looking for, but that is the reality of today's hiring at FEDEX.

Your FE written WILL NOT expire if you are CONTINUOUSLY EMPLOYED with a 121 carrier.

I know someone who was hired with an expired FEX written (came from a 121 carrier) and he ended up taking the written while in ground school.

I don't mean this in a condenscending way, so forgive me if it sounds as such. But, what is a weekend of studying and $75.00 (or so) to take the exam? It will be current and you will have no questions or reservations about it.

If it were me, I would just take it again and know that it is current.

Well, how will you ever know? No airline will ever tell you why you were shot down – because of lawsuits! Are you really willing to take the chance to save $75?

Correct, however my friend who interviewed at UPS was not only asked if he had a current FE written but if the written was less than 2-years old? It seems to imply that they do NOT care much for the part 121 exemption.

Why would anyone want to risk a multi-million dollar career just to save a few bucks? Put in on a credit card if you have to, but don’t push your luck!

I retook mine when I was hired in 05 and it saved me a lot of headaches. two people from my class had "expired on paper" FEXs and had to get all kinds of paperwork to show previous employment and take it to the FAA during business
hours to have them sign off on it. Save yourself a lot of problems and retake it, it will be one less thing to worry about during class.

I got a UPS interview with an expired FE written, but when they called with the interview, Buz asked several questions about it - end result was that I had to retake it before I came to the interview.

If you're too lazy to retake the FE written prior to the interview - I think it really shows a lack of interest in the carrier.

If you already have an FE ticket, then you don't need to take the written. That is only for those who haven't been an FE before.

I think Chris is talking about a WRITTEN test and not the ticket itself. A ticket does not expire, a written does.

Yes, for as long as UPS has airplanes that have an engineer seat. I think the 747 classics and the 727's are being phased out in a year or two but the Diesel 8's will be around for a long time.

I can see the logic of requiring an FE written as long as there are FEs in the fleet. Then anyone can be trained to fill the seat. But in reality, does it happen?

Yep! While FDX did direct hire about 70 new guys straight to the MD-11 FO seat this past summer, you had to accept ANC as your base to get it.

Of the 160+ guys they've brought into the 727 at Memphis since Aug, about 40 were direct hired into the FO seat, while the rest are sitting sideways in the back!

Current plans have the 757 replacing the 727 starting in 2008; however, the 727 should still be on property until sometime between 2011 and 2013...I'd imagine they'd keep training new guys for the back seat until they get the 727 fleet small enough to cover the back with all Over-Age 60 guys or until about the last 2 yrs or so, when they could seat-lock the remaining SOs so they wouldn't have to train new hires for a seat they'll only occupy a short time period. I've heard the break even point in terms of training cost is about 18 months.

If folks are considering a job at FEDEX in Memphis in the near future, they should still expect to start in the back seat of the 727.
