Labor Morale Not At A Zenith
Star Tribune Business Briefs
Pinnacle Airlines has been keeping a low profile this year as Northwest's other regional partner, Mesaba Airlines, battled with its labor unions in court and the news media -- until last week. A lane of traffic was shut down Tuesday outside Pinnacle's Memphis headquarters as about 235 Pinnacle pilots and their supporters marched in formation. A giant inflatable rat adorned the protest site, which union leaders said symbolized management greed.
Pinnacle management -- aware the event would be held -- erected a banner that welcomed Pinnacle pilots. The company also arranged for cookies and hot chocolate to be served to the pilots at the protest. But the union members did not embrace the neighborly gestures on the part of their employer.
Pinnacle management wants to reach an agreement with its 1,230 pilots, so it can strengthen its chances of securing flying for Northwest. The big carrier has created a competition among Pinnacle, Mesaba and other regional carriers, who have submitted bids to fly 50-and 76-seat jets. Northwest remains mum about when it will allocate the planes.
