According to the December 4th 2006 issue of Business
Week, Delta Chief Operating Officer Jim Whitehrst says
"Partly to tamper with the on-time performance of rival
JetBlue Airways Corp., Whitehurst added slower Dash-8
turboprop planes at LaGuardia Airport...."

Should get his facts straight...the dash's fly into JFK, not LGA

Do turbo props really slow things down? Under ten its all 250 KIAS (usually). And you can hold a higher speed for a longer time in a turbo prop than a jet since they are easy to slow down with those big blades creating all that drag at idle. I used to fly a 1900 and it was common to pass jet traffic on parrallel runways. Maybe the Dash 8 is different, but will it really slow Jet Blue down?

Someone should really check there stats. I flew a Dash for 3 years and I am sure we never slowed anyone down. On the arrivals we were always at lower altitiudes till below ten then any jet traffic. I heard a whole lot of you are overtaking the 737 in front by 50 knots and even once had the 100 knot overtake call into Seatac. My point is the Dash is a fun airplane that is very capable of slowing in a hurry if needed. You can hold 240 knots to about 10 miles and still get fully configured and on speed at the required points if you are on a 3 degree glide and know the airplane.

Besides...How often do you actually go into NYC and ORD areas and such with out getting slowed to 220 or 200 way the heck out when they are busy.

Whitehurst is a ******************************bag-He'll be the be the David Siegal of Delta.

Were you flying for Piedmont out of PIT? We were speed restricted quite a few times behind them.

If I had a nickel for every time I was slowed in a Dash for a jet (every time I land at LGA) I would have enough money for a serious streak dinner. The Dash isn't slowing anyone down.

I don't think he meant it literally. The flood of airplanes clogs the departure and arrival corridors and in essence, does slow JetBlue down. It is a problem, and JFK is definetely becoming more saturated.

As a former TP driver I can attest to the fact we could blow by any jet, especially lower (2000 AGL) I think the problem comes in integrating high-altitude fast moving (320 kts) into that 250 kt stream below 10,000 MSL.

I think the DOT would be very interested in his statements, as well as all the travelers who have to endure long delays in NY. Class act !!!

about half way down the article....

The brainy Whitehurst, a self-described "redneck" from the sleepy south Georgia town of Columbus, has brought a certain feistiness that never existed at the airline before. Indeed, the same company that once opted not to match AirTran's low fares has now adopted a more aggressive approach against competitors. Partly to tamper with the on-time performance of rival JetBlue Airways Corp. (JBLU ), Whitehurst added slower Dash-8 turboprop planes at LaGuardia Airport in New York to time slots just ahead of JetBlue planes. And last February, when AirTran announced it would begin offering Atlanta-to-Seattle service--a route that Delta has long had a lock on--the Atlanta carrier said it would fly regional jets on six AirTran routes from Orlando, AirTran's headquarters city. "We will not concede an inch of ground to AirTran ever again," Whitehurst told the gathering of Delta pilots in July. "This is our town. We will take it back."

Delta again

can't belive these guys can't think of a better way to compete. What a bunch of tools. The pilots would be better off going with US Airways.

The ironic thing is ever since Delta introduced the Dash-8s to JFK, its own DCI on-time performance and customer service has fallen dramatically. Too many departures out of too few gates is the result of their brilliant plan for gates 23 and 25.

Here's what they are really for! www.q400.com

What he meant to say was that he hired "MESA" to slow things down. Now that is entirely possible.
