Tower Error Led To Brazil Jet Air Collision - Report

DOW JONES NEWSWIRES
November 2, 2006 9:59 a.m.

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP)--The flight recorder transcript from the executive jet involved in Brazil's worst air disaster shows that the jet's American pilots were told by Brazilian air traffic control to fly at the same altitude as a Boeing 737 before the planes collided over the Amazon rainforest, the Folha de S. Paulo newspaper reported Thursday.

According to Folha, the flight recorder shows American pilot Joseph Lepore receiving instructions from the tower in Sao Jose dos Campos to fly northwest at 37,000 feet (11,277 meters) "until Eduardo Gomes," the airport in Manaus. That altitude contradicted the pilots' filed flight plan and as an odd-numbered altitude should be reserved for southbound flights.

Folha did not reveal how it had obtained the transcript, which the air force has not yet released to federal police investigating the Sept. 29 crash. All 154 people on board the Gol airline's 737 were killed. The badly damaged executive jet managed to land safely, and the American pilots have been ordered to stay in Brazil during the investigation.

Hopefully, Lepore and Paladino will be cleared of blame if this is true.

Glad to hear it - I had heard through connections that those guys were basically stuck in the hotel in Brazil with paparazzi hounding them if they tried to leave.

I was worried that the foreign "yankee cowboys" would get falsely accused. I guess there is still opportunity for that, but at least this report is a start out of there.

ps. Here is a link to a longer Washington Post article about it:

Tcas?

This still doesn't answer the question of why the 737 TCAS (and smaller plane if it had it) didn't work. It's exactly this situation where TCAS is valuable.

That's great news. Make sure you pass it along to the families of the 154 killed in the accident. I bet they will be stoked...

Very Nice

I suppose its not worth giving the poster of this thread the benefit of the doubt? I'm sure that he/she is not celebrating the death of the people in the 737! Of course I'm sure that you are friends with the pilots of the corp jet, who should also be dead, but now have to live with the fact that they are alive knowing all of those people didn't survive. Is it really impossible for people on this board to have any decency or respect? Instead, its constant bashing and measuring of D**Ks! This board has been a great source of information and sharing of ideas but I'm sick of reading this kind of crap!

The Legacy transponder apparently was off. Whether it got that way accidentally, purposefully, or via a software or hardware malfuntcion remains to be seen. The Honeywell box had an AD issued unrelatedly about a week later due to some problems with the unit switching to standby by itself.

Anytime an accidents cause is this clear and found this early, it IS great news. And yes, the families, unless they are secretely hoping that the "yankee pigs" caused the accident, will also find it great news for the same reason I wrote. It's caused closure. When you lose a loved one, you want to know why. Now they know why. Why are you such a sorehead?

It's good news if it pushes Brazil to improve thier (crap) ATC system to prevent further accidents.
