Anyone know the time it roughly takes to go from a second officer to first officer at Cathay? The mins. are 1000 fixed wing with an ATP.

Whew.

You're gonna need more than a couple of posts in a chat board to get hired at Cathay Pacific. It's the gold standard of airlines (IMHO).

Pre-screening interview in the U.S., followed by a THREE DAY interview in the Orient. And we're talking THUROUGH.

There are whole books devoted to 747 technical questions you want to be intimately familiar with, better be able to explain every system on every airplane you've ever flown, and you darn near need to be a professional meteoroligst.

There is at least one airline interview prep service for this one airline alone.

That said . . . the http://www.pprune.org/forums under "fragrant harbor forums" for good info.

What a bunch of head cases. This is what United used to be like in their old hiring practices back in the day. If you are a head case, they will hire you.

"Please explain the aerodynamic effects of a winglet". And why is this in the regional forum?

Maybe they know that you need to know that stuff to safely fly an aircraft.

They haven't had and accident, They have always being profitable, they have never furlough any employee, One of the best customer satisfaction rate in the world, amongst the lowest passenger complaints and the lowest misplaced bags records in the world. What do these head cases know about running an airline anyway? They are just a group of old head cases set on their ways, right?

I'm sure that is what some California wine makers say about the French.

Have a friend there flying right now...he can't wait to get on with a European outfit.
He must not be looking very hard. There are jobs to be had in the EU if you have the right to work there.
Instead of furloughing they just fire people. Cathay is one of the most labor hostile management groups on the planet.

People get fired from jobs here in the States all the time. If you are referring as them just not accepting people that commit immoral and unprofessional acts as them being 'hostile," well I guess that by western standards they are hostile.

If you look at it pragmatically. Folks are leaving US airlines by the masses. While folks leaving CX are just a handful

Well, since apparently no one wants to answer the original question, I guess I will. For the last while, SO to JFO progression has been running 3.5-4 years. Just spoke with someone the other day that was beginning his upgrade class is just under three years. With the 777-300 orders and their planned hiring of 250 per year, I would say this number will continue to drop. The company is currently trying to hire DEFO on the pax fleet, but the pilot group just voted on the new conditions of service with a resounding 87% no vote. We'll just have to wait and see what the company decides to do. As someone stated earlier, third most profitable airline in the world, 60 years with no furloughs, quite good conditions, especially as a SO in HKG. Lots of expansion in the future, and they just bought their cheif competition in HKG. If you can cope with a bit different lifestyle than you're used to, then come on down. And as an aside, they are interviewing a quite higher time than is listed for the mins, but it shouldn't stop you from aplying. Hope this helps and good luck.

Yea, right. I can see the report now... "They crash would not have occured if the flying pilot understood the aerodynamic effets of a winglet or the secondary voltage of the forward outflow valve."
