PARIS (AP) -- Airbus was expected to announce significant new delays to its flagship A380 jet Tuesday after its biggest customer, Dubai-based airline Emirates, said it had received notice that its planes will be a further 10 months late.Airbus parent EADS declined to confirm or deny that its board was scheduled to discuss a restructuring plan for Airbus and a new delivery timetable for its troubled A380, which already was about a year behind schedule when the latest production problems struck.
"Emirates has been advised by Airbus of a further 10-month delay to its A380 program, which means that our first aircraft will now arrive in August 2008," Emirates Chief Executive Officer Tim Clark said in a statement.
The new setback is a "very serious issue for Emirates," Clark said, adding that the airline is now reviewing its options.
In recent days, Airbus has been informing A380 customers of the latest delays as it tries to gauge the likely compensation bill. EADS had confirmed last month that the plane would be delayed a third time, without giving details.
The announcement prompted Emirates to warn on Sept. 21 that its 45-plane order, worth about $13 billion at list prices, was "up in the air." Virgin Atlantic Airways Ltd. also said the delay could affect its order for six superjumbos.
Virgin Atlantic said Monday it had received tentative information from Airbus on the new delays, but declined to give details.
French financial daily La Tribune reported Tuesday that EADS plans to announce drastic production changes that would see the closure of A380 cabin-fitting, paint shop and delivery centers in Hamburg, Germany, and the transfer of their workloads to Airbus headquarters in Toulouse, France -- saving on transport time and costs.
In return, Germany's share of the production of the A320 single-aisle jet family would be increased, according to the unsourced report. The report also said Airbus would deliver fewer than four A380s in 2007.
In a statement June 13, the plane maker slashed the number of scheduled deliveries in 2007 to nine from 25 as it announced the 555-seater A380's second six-month delay and a $2.5 billion profit warning. EADS shares plunged 26 percent the next day.
The crisis led to the sacking of Airbus boss Gustav Humbert and EADS co-CEO Noel Forgeard -- who remains under investigation by market authorities after it emerged that he exercised stock options to make a profit of $3.2 million just weeks before ordering an internal probe into the delays.
EADS is tightening its control over Airbus and is expected to buy BAE Systems PLC's 20 percent stake in the plane maker.
BAE shareholders vote Wednesday on a management recommendation to go ahead with the $3.5 billion sale. EADS shares were little changed at 22.39 euros ($28.40) in Paris trading.
 
I ran into a FedEx corporate pilot who told me that FedEx is going to bail on the A-380. Don't know if that is true or not. Anybody have any info on the A-380 and FedEx? No flame, just what I heard (and not the first time either).

In the interest of full disclosure, I currently fly the A-300-600 and the A-310. My intent was not to bash Airbus, although I believe their problems are self-imposed, but to find out if FedEx is considering cancelling the A-380 contract.

Airbus V Boeing issues aside, what if the delays cause multiple orders to fall over. What effect will it have on EADS financially???. I'm just wondering if the A-380 is almost a make or break expediture project for them.
 
Wasn't the 747 a make-or-break effort from Boeing? I think that EADS thought they could repeat that effort by making the A380. In the long run, I think that Boeing is going to come out on top of this with their 787.
 
Nothing from FedEx about cx'ing the 380, freighters were not supposed to be delayed as the delay (I think I read in the WSJ) was about wiring the entertainment TV's in the cabin. Boxes don't watch much TV.

Heh very true.

What would the other option be for FedEx? The new 747 freighters?
 
The 747 freighter may be the better chioce since it has front end loading and can be used in the current infrastructure. The reason the A380 may sink is becuase it has a better competeing product that is already avialable, the 747 did not.

The freight version of Airbus’ A380 superjumbo jet has been delayed along with passenger versions and won’t start deliveries until 2010, the airplane maker said yesterday.

Louisville-based UPS Airlines has been expecting to get the first of its triple-decker cargo planes by the end of 2009 and hasn’t gotten any formal notification from Airbus of any delays.

But Airbus North America spokeswoman Mary Anne Greczyn said yesterday in response to a reporter’s question that none of the freighters will be ready by 2009 and deliveries won’t start until the following year.

UPS hasn’t been notified of any problems with its order, but the package delivery company has been pressing for more information on the planes since July, and had talked with Airbus as recently as last week, UPS spokesman Mark Giuffre said yesterday.
 
I know it is a new airplane and you will have setbacks and delays, but it is just a bigger airbus than those already flying. Not all new technology etc. so why have they had so many problems? Poor management like the airlines? Any body else?
 
Instead of cancelling the A380 order, it might be a chance to get a bunch on the cheap as others bail out. Airbus will be looking for customers to buy the ones others choose not to take. Just MHO.

I'll bash Airbus, and not be ashamed to do so. I've flown with Airbus fleet managers, and guys who worked intimately with the boys in Toulouse, and to a man they say the 'bus arrogance is overwhelming. It's never their fault, ever. Always pilot error. Manufacturing issues; it's their suppliers. Etc, etc, ad nauseum.
 
Gorila ... after they laid the aa new york crash on the pilots I will bash them all i want... they refuse to be held responsible for anything.
