Sine the press release said the the 757s would REPLACE the 727s, how will this affect staffing? Going from approx. 110 three crew 727s to 90 two crew 757s has to have an impact on future staffing needs.

Also, by putting out this press release, the price for used 757s just went through the roof!

Hiring will slow

Well Fedex is retiring an avg of 200-250 guys per year according to guys in my squadron. Also add to the fact that the age 60 goes before congress in the fall. If both of these happen I could see trickle hiring. Just my take but you guys run the numbers. The good news is if hired your second year pay is really good. What do you guys think.

There can't be any hope of engine commonality. At least not when shopping for 90 airframes. Among potential cast-aside airframes are the early RR powered birds (with the shorter nacelle, not the -535E4) ex-TWA Pratt & Whitneys, Newer RR aircraft, you name it. It appears UPS had the same troubles, the ended up with a mixed PW/RR fleet.

UPS' first 25 factory built 757PFs were Pratt 2040 powered. The second batch of 50 were Rolls RB211 powered. UPS purposely ordered them that way. The Rolls were part of a larger deal involving the Tay 727 engine mod.

I'm sure this process will take a while. The article says beginning in 2008 with an 8 year transition.

"FedEx announced today a $2.6 billion, multi-year program to acquire and modify nearly 90 Boeing 757-200 aircraft to replace FedEx Express's narrow-body fleet of Boeing 727-200 aircraft. Subject to identification of suitable 757 aircraft to purchase and the successful negotiation of agreements to purchase such aircraft, FedEx Express expects to bring the new aircraft into service during the eight-year period between calendar year 2008 and 2016."

757s! Awesome.

You guys are asking where from and commonality, etc. I stand by my post on another thread that they will come from Delta and Northwest AFTER they merge and dump the 757s. Psssstttt.....they're all Pratt powered!!!

The real question is what engine is on approximately 10 all white 757s that are in Miami right now undergoing cargo retrofitting that used to masquerade as a Brazilian carrier that used to start with a V and had 5 letters. Those airplanes don't have Pratts, but maybe FedEx would blend engines.

All Cajuns keep your eyes peeled in Acadiana when these 757s start flying MIA-ARA for some spiffy new purple paint in the not too distant future (1st half of next year).

You heard it here first...

I wouldn't even stand near that post if I were you, much less right by it. Big D will never give up the 757 until a replacement is purchased. It's over 1/4 of the fleet and the main transcon aircraft. They are being retrofited with state-of-the art IFE at about 18 per month.

FWIW, if the new TA passes, I've heard it will require 400 more pilots to cover just the scheduling/rig changes. Perhaps that will offset the 2 vs 3 man crews. Although, like someone else said, it's going to be quite a few years before we see more 757s than 727s on the property.

Guat...

You're close...first 35 are pratts, last 40 are rolls. Shame you can't interchange because ups loves the rolls reliability a lot more than the pratt.

Let's see, in 1989 the "official" word was that all the 727-100s would be gone within a year...

I expect the -100s will finally be leaving us due to the AD that is on them, but the -200s will likely be around for quite a lot longer than anyone expects, we just can't afford to give up the lift as the growth rate exceeds the rate we get new airplanes. By the time the 727s are gone there will be a whole lot of something else to more than make up for that lift.

Bidding

Another upside...this should shake up the 727 seniority list...maybe motivate a few fellas to upgrade that have been staying in the seat. I've heard the 757 Indy base rumor too..that will be go senior. Have also heard the 757 being used in Europe to supplement our current Bus routes.

Not this fella. I'm staying until they tell me I have to leave. Someone else can have my training cycle...and my 757 raise to boot. Oh yeah that's right, same pay....nevermind.

I predict:

757 captain...more senior than 727...nice avionics and sexy jet.

757 F/O...junior to 727...more work at same pay. Exceptions will be guys senior enough to hold hometown lines.
