Can anyone pls shed some light on the "Zed Fare" system?

I am looking at getting on one of three airlines to go from Orlando
to London England.
Continental, Virgin or British Airways.
Anyone have experience doing this that can help out.
Do you know if it is possible to upgrade to business or first class?

Thx

Relatively simple, two companies come to an agreement on a zed fare in order to benefit both employee groups. Essentially the benefit will only exist because both companies agreed on it. Case in point I bought a zed fare on Qantas to get to New Zealand for 100 bucks, while the I-90 on Air NZ was 450 bucks. Of course QF was oversold while ANZ was wide open, but guess which one I risked getting on to. As far as upgrades go, I think you'll find it a stretch especially if it's international to get an upgrade when on a zed fare. In your case going to London I would put your chance at absolute zero. When I went to Australia on United on a j/s pass they put me in business, because the agents and crew kicked @ss!
