Anyone know anything about Zed fares? My understanding is that they are more used oversees (ie. Europe) than in the U.S. Anyone have a link to a website? I tried flyzed.com, but that doesn't seem to be the right site.

Thanks.

ZED ( Zonal Employee Discount ) Fares can be much better than ID90s. They are charged based on miles flown rather than a percentage of commercial fares. I really didn't understand them until I started my present job. I like them much better than ID90s though because they have some flexibility. They can be changed over to another carrier who accepts ZED fares.

On my last trip back to the States I looked at buying an ID90 on Delta to fly from SLC to MIA. I forget the exact price quoted but our staff ticket agent asked me if there was some reason that I chose Delta. I said, " no, not really, just thought they might have more flights per day ". He went on to explain that using a ZED fare on the same city pair with Continental would save me almost 50%. In the USA I think Continental, USAirways, Northwest, and AA are the only carriers that use the ZED system.

There are 9 distance zones under ZED. Each zone refers to the distance flown in Ticketed Point Mileage ( TPM ). Under each travel type, there are three fare levels: Low (ZL), Medium (ZM), and High (ZH). Each of these fare-levels depends on the bilateral agreements with individual carriers. Infants below age 2 travel free.

Your company should have a list of agreements with other carriers for you to check.

TP gets the gold star for the day, good gouge on the "Zed" fares

Positive space these days is practially nothing. ZED must give a rebate. Hmmm, almost free for a seat, or free SA. Hmmmm.....

You're right about the great deals that exist on tickets these days. However -- in my case, anyway -- the attractiveness of pass or staff travel is the flexibility.

You can book at the last minute, and you can change travel dates as needed without any fees. And, they are usually almost fully refundable if unused.

I think it stands for Zonal Employee Discount. It is a new system among participating airlines for non-rev travel. Your fare is based on the number of miles you are travelling and the ticket is good on any of the participating carriers. Usually they are cheaper than ID90's. Truly a win-win program for employees and companies. Instead of buying multiple tickets for backups, then getting refunds for all of them, theoretically you would just need one ticket. The problem right now is that not all airlines are participants. I don't have a list in front of me but Quantas, Cathay, Alaska, American are participants as are a bunch of others.

Yeah, yeah, the Gimp.

Doesn't your pass bureau have to be up to speed on these things? Doubtful ours even knows what they are, let alone who they can be used on. Or do you go directly to the airline you want the Z fare on?
