What do you think is the reason for the majority of crews sitting reserve?

Sick time depending on the contract isn't generally a liability to the balance sheet (in non-contractual labor situations it is almost zero impact to the balance sheet). If you have 1000hrs of sick time and I fire you, lay you off, or you quit unused sick time is often forfeited. This depends on the contract that YOU negotiate. Unused vacation time on the other hand has to be paid out generally and it is and can be a rather large liability to the balance sheet. Also, depends on the terms in your contract. One of the best ways to bulk a balance sheet up in Q1 is to get all your managers to take 2-3 weeks of vacation. Shuffling the shells...

Sick time again isn't something you earn and are owed I completely disagree. It is part of my contract to use within the terms of the contract., ideally nobody ever uses any of it because nobody is sick. PTO is PTO and sick is sick.
These are just word choices to influence the minions... My terms for word choices:

Liberation Day...PAID day off that I negotiated into my contract, which allows me to take off a day of MY choosing, for my own personal reasons, be it that I am biologically sick, or just need a break from the insane pace and hours that we have allowed our profession to become...

zero liability on the balance sheet. but operationally, it is a disaster because the entitlement mindset takes over and sick time is abused so that it does not expire! You'll seldom see guys with 1000 hrs of sick time. On the contrary they will miraculously fall sick on weeks that fall around thanskgiving, christmas and other key dates

The move to PTO is a disaster since for those who are genuinely sick it means loss of income but of course that fact is lost on most.
