What the brain-children who do airport security don't understand is that anyone who wants to whip off a Stinger at an airliner probably will also bring a friend with an AK to hose down any curious, recent immigrant, new-hire security officers.

At least we can sleep well knowing the TSA is out there sniffing crewmember's breath to detect drunk pilots...TC

Of course none of them thought it was funny when I pointed out that we weren't standing, but rather sitting, in our car...
Suppose you're lying down in the back seat of your car...does that count?

Oh geez, now they are going to post "No laying down in the backseat of the car either" sign.

How does that song go: "Signs, signs, everywhere there's signs."

Post Road@MSP

<-----Anyone else ever sit at Post Road at MSP? In the old days (Pre mid 90's) you could just pull off into the dirt on the side of the road. Now it's paved with parking for plane watchers, however there is no over night parking.

After they built up the fences and parking lots on the south side of 30L, though the view isn't as good.

In MKE and GRR they have great plane spotting areas, In MKE it's on the apparoach end of 19R I think:D . In GRR they have one on the south side of the field for runways 26L/8R. On nice days both areas are packed with people picnicing or snapping photos of arriving A/C.
I really enjoy seeing the kids out there reminds me of when my dad and I did the same thing.

As for the vaunted Patriot Act that is one of the biggest lies thrust on the american public since Mc Carthyism in the 1950's. The new federal mandate goes like this Of course their guilty we just haven't figured out what they did yet! but we will dig into them deeper than the church of Scientology to find them guilty of SOMETHING..
......................Rant over

MCO has a great spotting hangout just north of 18L and 18R and I'm certain it's well within the 300 yard thingy.

I think I remember them closing it for Security reasons.

Many moons ago when I was instructing full time, I had a night job doing security at an industrial site. Part of my area included a private access road, which had a very large sign stating that it was private property, no loitering, no trespassing, yada, yada.

One night I spotted a car parked just in front of the sign. Occasionally people parked and attempted to climb the fence (for whatever purpose) that surrounded the installation. I shut off my headlights and parked behind their vehicle, and approached the driver side of the car. The windows were fogged over, and the left rear window was missing, and taped-over (a common sign of a stolen auto).

I rapped on the driver window with my flashlight, and the window rolled down a few inches. Inside I saw what must have been a very tired young lady, because she was resting her head in her gentleman-friends lap. I asked them what they were doing there, and they asked me if perhaps it might not be obvious. I asked if they had read the sign. They wiped some of the condensation off the front windscreen and read the sign...and then asked if I knew any better places to go. I suggested the airport. After all, that's where everybody went to engage in interpersonal communication.

Nope, they said. Tried that, got kicked off the field by the policia. Any better ideas? Try the canyon, I said. Everybody who doesn't go to the airport goes to the canyon...

Imagine that. What's this world coming to when one can't procreate at the airport, any more? Ah well, it makes sense. They might be creating a terrorist...

I loved sitting there. watching the planes go by. I haven't been near there in afew years, but figured with all the building at the SA it probably wasn't there anymore.

*sigh* planespotting used to be fun. Now it makes you a possible terrorist.

just slightly to the left of 32 in KPIT there is a cemetary, and the fence just STOPS, it starts back up on the other side of it, but hmm...don't you think they'd be more worried about that then photographers?

oh hey, Typhoon and Ailerongirl, yes laying down counts as not standing up...and Ailerongirl, if you steam up the windows enough they'll never know you're in there...:D

MKE even went so far as to have a low wattage FM transmitter tied in to the tower freq so you can listen through your car radio when you're in the plane spotting lot.

Also off the 29's departure in KFAT used to sit there on the Harley with the wife watching A/C take off on the arrival side there's the ubiquitious strip bar affectionately called 29R. Not that I ever went inside you understand.:D

Avbug--I'm disappointed...

You missed a perfect opportunity to help promote aviation *and*, um, foster goodwill towards man...or something like that...

You should've encouraged them to join the Mile High Club.

Surely that's a lot safer than some dark dead end on a deserted road.

Back on topic: Bad cop, no doughnut.

I suppose a truly opportunistic individual might have offered assistance, but I've never been one much for crowds (three being a crowd).

I want the donut. I'll do anything for the donut. As long as it's not a krispy kreme donut, the one manufactured by satan; the one recommended by four out of five devils for their minions who chew donuts. But any other donut. If it's a cake donut. I want that donut.

I guess I should have told them about the security camera on the sign...copies, anyone?

At AUS, there's a graveyard that sits right off the approach end of 17R. Years ago, we'd take lawn chairs and coolers of booze to the graveyard and kick back and watch the jets land right over the top of us. It was pretty awesome.

I haven't been there in awhile though - dunno if you can still get away with that. Maybe I'll find out this weekend.

AUS has a little viewing area between the golf course and the Pooling board hanger. I've driven there to eat lunch a few times when I've had meetings in the area.

When I fly out of Signature I always try to get a picture of the most interesting bizjet that I can find, but both the lineman and the rent-a-cop will yell at me if they see me doing it.

Cedar Rapids, IA Rwy 27 Pre 9/11 you could stand within the approach lights (outside of the airport fence) all day. After 9/11 I was told to leave by a police officer because I cannot loiter.

Cedar Rapids, IA Rwy 9 Post 9/11: I was told that I cannot park on the side of the road and had to leave.

Denver Intl: My friend and I took lots of pictures a few months ago and the police drove right by.

Most absurd: Portland Intl You will see on your 10-9 Jepp chart the note that says “Twy T between the North Ramp and the General Aviation Ramp closed to through traffic. I heard they built a fence to keep the GA people/planes away from the Airliners. The ironic thing is that if for some reason a GA plane or person wants to breech the airline security, all they have to do is taxi on A4-A-A5 and they effectively bypassed the fence. Of course they could take the grass between the taxiways if they were in a hurry.

The most Ironic: I recently few out of a feeder airport in Denver with a friend in his plane. He instructed me to go through X FBO’s doors and meet him on the ramp. I proceeded to walk through the FBO, note the huge “NO UNAUTHORIZED ACCESS PAST THIS POINT” sign, and as I am still walking, say “hi” to the people at the desk and proceed out to the ramp through that restricted access point.

I pulled out the inflight magazine and read that it was against United Airlines policy 'to take photographs of cabin crewmembers performing their duties.' Or something to that effect. Whatever.

Why in the heck would we want to take pictures of a United F/A anyway??? After all the furloughs, they're mostly a bunch of old hags with attitudes. Sad, truly sad.

During this one-man picture-taking orgy, a San Jose Metro Police Officer in a marked car cruised right past me (this time I was in Uniform) and he didn't even slow down.

That's because he was rushing to an emergency! There must have been an SWA FO ON THE RAMP (not in the footprint of the aircraft), waiting for his inbound a/c to the walkaround!

;)

"The Greatest Security Show on Earth" must go on!

Mmmm.... donuts..

Avbug, what if it were two girls parked in a car with the windows all fogged up, and they had a dozen cake donuts on their lap, would you still feel the same way? Would three still be a crowd?

2 girls and screw the donuts...

Oohhh I know the answer to that.... Why don't we at a cargo company ever get the fun you guys do....

MCO Viewing

The perimeter road north of the approach end to 18L/R is now posted as no stopping or standing....what a shame, it was a great place to view and eat from the road side vendors that use to set up there. :( :(
