The is for a mooney so I don't know if it will work in your case but I typically fly north-south on a commute and had connectivity problems northbound. I was told by the tech that XM has 2 sat's (rock and roll) which are geo-sync'ed southeast and southwest. The solution that worked for me was to purchase a splitter that comes out of the XM box and place one antenna in the lower left and lower right side of the glareshield deflected ~45 degrees with the shape of the window. Additionally I got suction cup mounts to hold the antenna alined with windshield. Hope this applys/helps.

do you have a link for the splitter? no luck in my search.

Sattelites are your problem

The problem you are having is due to the position of the satellites. All of the XM sats are located in the southern sky thus the XM antenna must have a clear line of site view of the southern sky at all times information is sent or received. I had the same problem with a portable xm radio. I had to have an antenna mounted on the top. This however is a little harder to do on a pressurized aircraft due to the paperwork needed to make a new hole in the pressure vessel. There is a loop hole though that will allow you to run a cable through any already existing hole in the pressure vessel with out all the paper work nightmare. You will have to have one of the STC'd Antennas for XM but mount it on top of the A?C near the rear of the jet behind the Pressurized section (usually above the Baggage compt.) and away from all the RVSM critical equip. then run the cable with all the other wiring harnesses that go up to the panel.
