I am starting class here soon for ExpressJet and was wondering what's the typical class schedule like... is it the standard 8am to 5pm M-F or is training conducted on weekends and odd hours as well - not just for the sim but for ground school. Also, are we allowed to pick our sim partner? Thanks.

Yes, 8-5 until you hit the sims, then it could be any time of the day. And yes you can pick your sim partner.

Congrats, and welcome to XJT!

TA

Actually, im not sure which week, but they will do two classes at a time. A morning run starting at 5A and another starting a 3P. A buddy of mine just got on as a ground instructor and he got stuck with the night one I think.

At any rate it shouldnt matter be pumped you are here!

Its is a great place with great people!

So as a new hire which aircraft would I be training on initially the 135, or the 145....or both?? Someone clarify please?

It is one type rating. You train for the generic.... once you learn one you can fly them all 135, 145, 145XR....its all the same.

I am the afore-mentioned buddy.....

Classes are now running 2 at a time and will continue as such into the new year. Basic Indoc is just twice as many in class. Systems is either a 0600-1500 or 1500-2400. Luck of the draw.... Currently Im teaching 1500-2400 and they had sat. off, but we had class today (sunday) so don't count on weekends off. In fact, this was the class' first day off since starting 2 weeks ago.

Yes you pick your sim parter so choose wisely. Not only will you be their partner but you get to live with them for 8 weeks.

FTD's and sims are same deal, schedule can be anyday and anytime....and now sims are just about any location.... IAH, HOU, DFW, PHX etc.
Good luck. See you in class.

The PHX sim is out at the MESA training center...
Atleast we are paying the contract company there (CAE)

And don't forget, when you do get days off, they will positive space you home and back! That was a nice little perk
Positive space is usually only on the way back, its a normal listing to go home. The other great thing is that the sim spots are seniority based.

Both of your statements are false.

Positive space is both ways, you are PS5 on the way home and PS0 on the way back. PS5 means you can only bump a rev passenger on the last flight. PS0 means you can bump a rev passenger on your listed flight.

Also, when did sim spots get to be seniority based. I was in the sim at the end of september and both my sim partner and I were in the bottom of our class and we had the 10:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. sim slot(i.e. the best one there is to have, wake up have breakfast, go to FS in HOU, got free lunch like 4 times, get back to hotel and get happy hour dinner). Everybody that was senior to us had worse sim times than ours. We were also in the first group to go meaning we didnt have a week to week and a half wait, we went right in.

I'm purchasing some study material from the crew dog site to get a jump on things......are these the same limitations and numbers I should be memorizing before class?

dont buy anything, they give you what they want you to know. only study and learn what the company gives you or you will probably go insane trying to learn junk from another book and then changing it to xjt stuff.

yeah, dont waste your $$ on the crewdog stuff..not necessary...one of the instructors sells a much better guide, but I really wouldnt buy it except for upgrade, maybe......for initial, you dont need anything else but the white binder, notes from class, and the CFM, FOM they give you....save the bucks for 1st yr pay and an occassional night at hoot county or rick's...

You are a must ride on the last flight of the day going home, and a must ride on a last flight that gets you back at a time reasonable for rest and studying.

Please, Please Please dont buy stuff ahead of time. You are contaminating yourself. We have some of the pre-mods done and you will have to unlearn anything that isnt like our aircraft. Just get the materials they give you and study what we tell you..... I hate telling people that its not the way you read it in that "other book." Annoying.... We tell you plenty in class so study what we give you here.

Also don't buy a thousand dollars worth of uniforms and a $400 leather flight bag until you're done with training and have been on the line for a while.

You can tell the new guys in the training center because they're all sporting shiny new Coyote Leather flight bags. Guess what, every class usually has one or two who bust out. You don't want to be that person and be on the hook for a fistful of C-notes you can't afford. There's nothing worse than watching a guy struggle through training whiile toting an expensive piece of luggage around.

Don't get me wrong, the Coyote bags are nice, but save your money until you can really afford one.

My $49 Office Depot Kit(with attached wheels) is still going strong after two years and almost 2000 hours. Why waste money on something that's just going to get beat up anyway?

Hook your bag up right and you wont have any problems with it being destroyed. Ive seen one guy with a coyote works bag who basically drags it on the metal all the time, its probably hooked to his bag about 8 inches to low and he has to drag his knuckles on the ground almost to keep his bag from dragging. Ive seen a few other people like that as well.

Didnt they have you go up and pick your time based on seniority? If you got a good time and were less senior then maybe others didnt pick those spots, then again it might be different for newhires.

Unless they changed that, I was second most senior in my class, and I was assigned Midnight-7AM.

Also was positive space both directions.
