For some reason, we as professional aviators do not realize that our endless suffering is due to simple market forces and regulatory lethargy. In other words, there are too many of us, and the FAA is run by morons who don't see the danger of inexperienced, unmotivated, fatigued, and under-payed pilots. Too many young folks think flying is an easy way to make a lot of money, cavort with a lot of exotic ladies and never work. It is time to kill the myth! It is time to start protecting ourselves...from ourselves! It is time for a website that DISCOURAGES impressionable youngsters from becoming the next new-hire FO nightmares who will fly that 150 seat RJ for less money next year. Since I am neither creative nor internet savvy, nor sober, I invite some clever person to actually do all the work for this website. I'm sure oodles of creative content can be gleaned from responses to this very thread. Topics on this website would cover poverty/indentured servitude, lack of available FA's for spawning, public hatred/disrespect of pilots, rapaciousness of large pilot-mill institutions, danger of flight instruction, aviation induced divorce syndrome and even the unacceptable levels of high fructose corn syrup in the cranberry juice cocktail. On a more serious note, video interviews with senior CA's who have lost their retirement savings would provide complete media content for the YouTube generation and drive home the message. This is a tiny list of the many topics to be discussed on DONTBEAPILOT.COM's page. So lets hear it folks! Who will turn this "pilot shortage" into a Pilot Shortage? Eye upolojize 4 aknee speling mystaches. Ok its time for bed.

Sorry, man. We've heard it all before. Just another regional FO complaining about his job and low pay. There have been dozens of these things throughout the years. Some are YouTube videos, some are forum posts, others are websites; nobody really cares. If you're unhappy, get out now while you still can. I hear that real estate agent is the hot job this year.

The myth has already been killed. It was a long time ago, and with a little bit of research anybody can figure this out before shelling out thousands of $ for this career. Yeah, regionals suck for the first couple of years. Good thing there are other ways to fly for a living besides the regionals!

Hmmm. I don't think my message has been understood. I'm relatively content. I DO think that at least a third of professional pilot population are/were completely unaware that what they get into would make them miserable! DONTBEAPILOT.COM would separate the myth from fact, and discourage those who are NOT insane enough to actually enjoy what what we do. That is all.

But wait Kit Darby says that the industry is getting better and that because of the pilot shortage we can all expect our wages to increase in the future.
Kit Darby says that there has never been a better time to become a pilot.

200 days a year on the road.
Crappy Hotels.
Long duty days.
Poor quality food choices.
No quality of life....

all this for $20k....

They could just take a look at the FI regional board; that'll scare them for sure :D

Instead of dontbeapilot.com it would be better to have a web page that was neutral. Something like www.airlinelife.com. It would be just the facts about the job. Reserve, commuting, trips, overnights, flight instruction, etc. Then people could make a more informed decision and they if decided to still choose this career they couldn't b1tch about it.

Go back to a desk job if it's too tough on you...

I think there are way too man short pilots out there. Rarely do I fly with a pilot who is 6ft or taller.

you live 2 miles from an air carrier airport? That must suck. On your income I would expect better.

I think your friendly disgruntiled pilot group at AWAC has already done that with their www.doihaveafuturehere.org web site. Send all your friends interested in this industry there first.

Well then, don't put my schedule up on the anti-pilot website.

Widebody reserve, 20-25 days off a month.
Nice hotels.
IRO's for those long duty days.
Choice of first class meals.
Long layovers in Europe, the Pacific, South America,.....
All of this for $120k.........

The eminem effect doesn't count. You can't submit with a straight face that a widebody reserve schedule is closer to the median 121 pilot compensation than new-hire regional FO reserve. This is part of the problem. People naturally point at the top end of the scale as if that was a reasonable expectation of compesantion for the MEDIAN, which in this industry is way closer to the bottom number than the top. I think the Air W site spelled it out pretty well. Fact is, for comparable professions that take you away from home consistently, pilot pay and bennies are under par. Of course, those jobs don't have the price inelasticity flying has, i.e. people would work this job even if it didn't pay anything, and many effectively do so today. It's a foregone conclusion really.
