This goes out to all the AWAC crews. I am curious as to some of the discrepancies that are squawked. There are a majority that are a waste of time for all concerned. This is not to say all are that way, but today has been a real dumb a$$ day. What gives???

I don't suppose any of the write ups were for logo lights...which appear to be considered as anti collision lights by some (well, just one of our pilots) even though it's customer optional equipment in the MM (not even installed on a number of our planes) and ends up delaying flights for a numbnut MEL at outstations... I wonder sometimes if taxi and landing lights should remain on through the flight for added anti collision protection...

Reminds me of a time logo lights were written up on a plane that didn't even have them installed... :p

Pilots are only trained to operate as pilots.

They are not trained to make decisions on the mechanical airworthiness of an item that appears to be not in the condition it is supposed to be as called out for in their pilot manuals.

A light is out. May not be just a bulb. Could have a wiring problem or short that may be a safety of flight issue.

If it is not standard as expected to be in normal operations and the MEL and flight manuals don't give you a right to get around it.

WRITE IT UP

Its not our job as pilots to make mechanical condition decisions.

The time you save the mechanics will never be apreciated because if they don't know about it because you didn't write it up they will never have known. Therefore they won't apreciate you saving them time.

I am a mechanic at home and a pilot at work.

I have learned this lesson hard the hard way.

speaking of logo lights at AWAC. I've been telling everyone I fly with to turn them off. Why should we be giving free advertising to United. uniTED dumped us F%$kem

You must be having a real bad day to be writing up logo lights. Landing lights etc I can see if you are at a base. Just remember it broke in flight if it is the get home leg....

To that degree I do understand, but a phone call would prevent alot of extra wasted time. I am not trying to save time for the mechs, but more for the pax that get inconvenienced over something foolish. Part of the reason we lost our flying to others is cost, because we waste an enormous amount of cash retrieving planes when something is so minor. I don't have any issues when it comes to safety, but I'm sorry, more often than not, the write-ups are laughable and it is a waste of money. When you can recognize employee numbers we have issues. There are some crews out there that I have known for many years, that we have worked elsewhere, and its amazing that I don't hear from them except on a rare occasion.
Cheers!!

Hey Maiko, did you know that if you insert a space between each of the aircraft in your profile that the little dark blue/gray area on the left side there would be smaller? Just a thought. Oh yeah, lame write-ups are stupid. :)

On the other hand, write ups, no matter how trivial, are what we are supposed to do. Sometimes it's the only way MX knows it doesn't work in the first place. It doesn't matter what it is or when it happened. It only takes a minute to get the thing deferred.

That I understand as well and MEL's are not a problem either, but common sense should have some prevalence. Mainly when a depower and re-power will usually clear the fault. That becomes expensive when we have to send our mechs to do just that. Charters cost a small fortune.
Cheers!!

Yeah, some write-ups are lame. But nevertheless, even the lame stuff will never get fixed unless somebody writes it up. And handing over a plane full of undeferred problems to another crew is even more lame.

Agreed. I wasn't responding to you, though. I was referencing Bluto's comment about lame write ups. If it's broken, write it up. I don't care if it's a light or the freakin' wing fell off. Don't hand the aircraft to me in that condition without it properly addressed. That's lame.

My original post was sarcastic. Sorry, I don't really have a dog in this fight. My philosophy: When in doubt, write it up.(but call Mx control first.)
