Quick update...

After a whopping day of door knocking, no real bites (but everyone wants me to give the DoM my resume). I think this weekend I'll head north towards Fairbanks, if and when that fails, I'll head south. And after all that, Bethel. It's too expensive to get to Bethel to go there too early :)

But the weather is sure nice here right now. Wish it were colder (literally).

Dan

Wow, nice to have a step-by-step of somebody's adventure up there! Keep it up please :)

I'll PM you shortly with some contact info to try. I wouldn't bother going to Bethel. Almost all the operators there are based in anchorage. Bethel is mostly an outstation, there are a few outfits based there but they're small time stuff.

Hey billybob- I think I sent you a PM awhile back with a bunch of alaska info on it. If you still have it you should pass it on to Dan here. It looks like that info landed you a job, maybe it will work twice.

good luck

Too bad I don't have a digital camera with me. I'd make a weblog of all the folks telling me I need 1200 hours and a load of float time to lfy wheels :)

Bob PM'd me some stuff a while ago. I don't know if that's the same stuff you sent him moving2vegas, but I got some info.

Yessir, at least it's an adventure! I'm kind of hoping I get to hitchhike my way around the state before I find a gig :)

Dan

PS-I'm also glad I left my boots and ice axe at home, there's NO WAY I'd be thinking about jobs if I had my trusty Black Diamond in my hands :) Unfortunately, my cousin tells me he's got a spare ice axe and time to go hiking... Look out. :)

Keep posting your adventurous search - I'm sure you'll find something.

When you head up to FAI, stop in at Everts Air Cargo and Arctic Circle Air (there is more). I had a friend who went to Everts, this guy doesn't even have his Comm done yet, and they told him to come back when he has 500 hrs and then they'll speak to him.

Also, if your in ANC, stop in at Lynden, I know they want FE's who have an A&P and if you have some time you might be able to jump to FO from start - you then upgrade to the right seat (good money from the get-go).

Keep posting...... If you don't find anything, PM me and I'll give you some info that will get you a job.

I remember a trip I made 12 years ago to ANC to look for a job. I had 500 hours and a suit. Ditched the suit in a day. Made my way down to JNU and got a job offer down there.

I couldn't tell you how many operators literally threw my resume back at me, one telling me "Aint no one gonna hire you."! It was definitely more competitive in ANC than out in the bush. Can you afford to make it up to FAI??? Maybe Talkeetna, Tok or 40 Mile.

Good luck to you. I kind of wish I were in your shoes right now!

It's looking like I'm heading north around the end of this week. I've got other business to attend to in Talkeetna (turns out a mountaineering friend of mine is bumming around there right now), and I've got to catch up with an old Dog Sledding buddy this week too. I'm seriously thinking I should just throw out the resume and walk in with an ice axe and get the folks to send up a few of my old dog sledding trophies. Alaskans worship mushers!

At least nobody has thrown anything at me, other than puzzled looks. Perhaps that's because they want me to go have a chat with someone about swinging a wrench for them. :)

Fairbanks soon enough. Are there as many espresso stands there as in Anchorage?

A suit, really? I don't even have a shirt with a collar on it. But I do have some nice T shirts (the Marmot is my favorite--it somehow looks nearly "professional"). Maybe that's my problem, perhaps I need shirts without logos and cartoons on them :)

Seriously, I'm just wondering how I didn't end up here sooner.

What can I say, Alaska kicks a$$. Sorry I have not been around but 14 hours of ground a day = beer and bed. I just started flying a few days ago and should be out on the line in a few more weeks. Jackson everything you said was correct and thanks again for the great info. Dan good luck looking for work and keep your head up, at least you’re in the greatest place on earth Alaska!
