Pilot Shortage Sparks Government Action Overseas

An explosion of low-cost carriers and a shortage of viable flight schools is behind a pilot shortage that has forced some airlines to ground aircraft and even cancel flights in India. According to Rediff.com, the country will need about 3,500 pilots in the next five years and domestic schools are only producing about 100 a year. The shortage is so acute that the government has taken drastic measures over the past year to try and minimize the impact on travelers. In December, the mandatory retirement age was increased to 65 (a pilot younger than 60 must be in the cockpit) but it's the so-called anti-poaching legislation that has pilots in the biggest lather. As the new airlines opened up, they naturally tried to lure pilots from other carriers and money is the most obvious incentive. Indian airline pilots make about $10,000 a month, ten times what an Indian air force jockey makes. To cut down on cherry picking by pilots (and the schedule disruption it brings), the government passed a law that requires pilots to give six months' notice before switching airlines. The law also prohibits them from refusing to work a normal number of flights during the six months.

Well, you could apply, I do believe some of the crewleasing companies are hiring for India.

China supposedly could be facing the same situation, a pilot shortage.

Hi!

It will be happenig in a couple of years, providing we don't have an oil shortage melt-down.

Who had their best production years in quite a while?
Boeing
Airbus
Embraer
Gulfstream
Cessna (jets)
Bomardier
Beechcraft

NASA predicts 10K VLJs flying by the year 2020.

The pilot production numbers have been steady in the US for a number of years, and the numbers of pilots required to fill all those new seats are going to be going up, up, up. So hang in there (and hope for the discriminatory Age 60 rule to be changed soon), and it will be better soon. Either that or go fly overseas. I think Emirates is great!

India calls their country a Democracy???? Remember the Terry Gilliam movie Brazil? This is it.

That country is a bureacratic nightmare that discourages new ideas, growth and individual rights. It is an embarrassment. 6 months notice to leave a job?? The company would make your life a living hell for that. All for the benefit of companies that paid off the government reps that made the law.

On a positive note, we should all be thankful of the freedoms and liberties we have here. Even if they are not perfect.

Just wait until they start taxing you on road use using a gps mounted on your car, with the promise that the data won't be used to track your movements. Never mind that the President just simply found it ethical to order unlawful wiretaps.

Two counties on the west coast are utilizing the car mounted gps trackers in a test program as we speak. The idea is tax those that use busier roads during rush hour in an attempt to alleviate crowded roads.

The Mayor of Milwaukee wants Wisconsin to pass a law making all WI residents take their guns down to the cop shop to shoot bullets for bullet fingerprinting. Never mind that MD just spent 2 million dollars figuring out that it wont work.

A town in Florida uses digital imaging cameras autonomously hooked up to a digital data uplink system. If you drive in their town, they know where you live and that you were there.

The Lautenberg amendment to the 1968 Gun Control Act provides for the loss of constitunal rights in the event you are arrested for a misdemeanor. Your wife, girlfriend, or kid shoves you, you shove back and there's cops at your house? You can forget about shooting trap on the thursday night trap league unless you plan on using a cardboard shotgun.

For a decade, threads, hinges, fasteners, grips, and cylindrical shapes of metal were banned features on new production rifles that were semi-automatic and possessed detachable magazines. Evedently, they didn't like 1/2 X 28 TPI the most.

Wisconsin Attorney General Jim Doyle, previously attempted to ban semi-automatic firearms in WI by making possession of metalic cartridge primers a felony. His bill would have exempted those persons who possessed metalic cartridge primers from prosecution, if they were possessed in conjuction with a single shot rifle or shot gun.

You don't need to go to India...
