I have found a few FBO's who have an unsecured wireless network which you can piggy back on and surf the internet... a few are offering the service free, such as some Signatures... Unfortunately with as cheap as it is to set up, most FBO's do not yet offer this valuable service...

Quite a few of the Million Air's, HOU fer sure.

whats the deal with....

lets say I am at hotel XXX and am able to receive the signal for Wi-Fi offered by hotel YYY next door

also, maybe I am across from the FBO that offers Wi-Fi

whats the legal parameters of using the signal?

if they permitted you to do it, even though you were not 'on premises' it's okay. If however, you never asked, you are pirating their signal and bandwidth.
Don't think there are any penalties, yet.

If they leave it open, use it!! If they want it hidden, it will be.

just dont be a hog and move tons of pics and music.

all piedmont has it free. Nice perk. Signature IAD has it free too.

Just be sure you sign out of Flightinfo when you're done! :D

I installed the WiFi network at my airport (5R2), but it's protected by WEP encryption, so it's not free to outsiders......but you're welcome to come in and use the PC in our pilots lounge.

WEP is fairly easy to crack. I'd use a combination of WEP and MAC filtering. Although, once a WEP key is cracked, you can grab a MAC and spoof it.

It's amazing the people that do not protect their WiFi's. I can see about 8 different WiFi's at home, but only three of them (mine included) is has WEP configured.

KigAir is right in that WEP is easy to crack. However, there is shareware and such available to help fill some of the holes and monitor who is on your WiFi if it isn't secured. My guess would be that www.download.com has quite a few, although I'm not familiar with specific names of programs.

That is why I use WPA, TKIP, AES and MAC filtering... about as "uncrackable" as wireless can get.... these days... and since there is about 2 dozen unsecured networks in my neighborhood, and another buch that have WEP only, I'm not too worried, there are much easier targets out there...

Re: Airports with hotspots?

So what about airports that have free hotspots? Where are they?

Before connecting to a free hotspot, make sure your virus defs are up to date and you have some sort of firewall installed on your computer. Also for those places that only provide a public internet terminal, I would recommend that you do not access any sites where you access personal data such as online banks. There have been more than a few cases where public internet terminals have had software such as keyboard sniffers installed which would allow a person to capture your login id and password.
