Quite the dorky question, I know, but still- I'd rather sit on the side of the plane that has the cool view.

HNL, OGG (maui) and LIH (kuai): for these 3 airports anyone know the preferred/normal takeoff runway for hawaiin airlines planes?

Departing HNL sit on the left for a good view of Oahu, Molokai and Kaanapali/Lahaina on Maui. OGG back to HNL sit on the right to see Molokai and Oahu again. Going to LIH not much to see out either window, aircraft left will be your best view of Kauai on final.
Off course all this goes out the window (no pun intended) if the winds switch to Kona's!

Probably so on Go. However Hawaiians flights are still running pretty full.

The 83% load factor is systemwide. Mainland is holding it's own, some flights like Tahiti are light and SYD is only been running half full since the holidays. Inter-island is probably more than 83% full and has been way to full to "move around"

Absolutely, the loads have been very light to SYD lately, the Aussie dollar is only about 65 cents compared to the U.S.
Which translates into everything is way cheaper in Australia and I'm assuming their weakened buying power is reducing the amount of Aussies traveling.
Also, I believe SWA has a Zed fare with us, so your ticket should be pretty cheap.
Can't go wrong if you go to Australia. The place is awesome.

HNL-LIH - I prefer the view out the right side on a clear night/day. Right turn after take off gives you a nice view of Pearl Harbor and the West side. Left side is better for the approach into LIH However.

My bad! I did not think an airline with 83% load would post a Quarterly Loss. Lousy Air fare war....

Actually they had a $29 million operating profit. They were able to show a loss by a lot of one time charges, they paid taxes ahead of time, they bought fuel hedges, etc. All the unions are in contract talks right now, so, the company is walking a tightrope between the investors and labor. I've heard all the explanations and it's way too extensive to go into here. The bottom line is Hawaiian is in relatively good shape with a very good balance sheet.
Mesa?Go is in such bad shape that they can no longer piss away money, so inter-island is no longer a cash drain.

Hawaiian is not flying a lot of empty seats around. It's also not losing money. Quite an achievement in this economy.

If Tahiti flights are light like he mentions I would highly recommend going there. Best place I have ever spent two weeks in my life (old Beach Comber in Moorea). Once the locals determine you are not French they will give you most things for free. The French own everything, the locals hate the French, thus you get free stuff (and food which is not spat upon make sure when ordering food they know you are not French).
